Processes

thats very high, but since you have 1.5GB of ram its not really anything to worry about, unless there using up alot of cpu resources. I have 37 running processes.

So how do I know which ones are needed and which ones arent, so I can de-activate a few from Start > Run > msconfig ?

Obviously if you've installed AV software that you want to run on startup, then you'll want to leave those. You should be able to figure out what the programs are by looking at the name of the exe file.

run msconfig and disable anything that you dont need. Just make sure you know what it is first.

Open up ms config then select the services tab then check the box that says hide all microsoft services, the ones that are left are the ones you can shut down things like messenger and ituneshelper and stuff like that dont need to be running in the back ground!

Just because you have lots of ram doesn't mean you shouldn't worry about it. If you had a AMD FX57 or amd X2 4800(Or a High intel, the number system they use is to confussing for me to remember :P ) and 4gb of very good dual channel ram, you should still worry about it, because that is alot of processes for your system when its not doing anything, and its prabally the result of spyware.

I use Startup CPL to manage the progs that startup on my Pc, its a lot more convenient than msconfig and you can also delete things instead of just disabling them. for a link: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

It really depends on what you are doing with your computer to determine how many processes it too much. When on the internet, I have my Firewall, D/L manager, Firefox, etc... running so usually I have around 38-40 processes when online but when playing games, I keep it below 30.

When my system has nothing else open it only uses 240mb, i think ver 400 would be a problem.
Ditto...when I am idle my system is only using 200mb and thats with norton2005 running in the background!
