Hey, I want to know, I want to upgrade my processor, but I don't know if my hard drive will get screwed up..I have an older AMD processor, and I want to upgrade to a better one..

whats your computer specs ? Ive always been told if you change the cpu that it is best to format the primary HDD.

AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+ @ 1.52 GHz

XP Home SP1

I believe..MEDION KT-400-8235 Motherboard

BIOS.. Phoenix Technologies

Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti 4200 w/ AGP8X...(A lot of Pixels dont get pixelated when I play high quality games..)

Maxtor 6Y080P0 80 Gig HDD

512MB DDR-SDRAM Micron

52x32x52 LITE-ON LTR-52327S

Power supply..Not sure.

Don't want to lose all my info..If I bought another hard drive and backed up everything on there...Could I somehow do something with that ? Thanks man

If you got a new cpu, i dont think you have to reformat, but if you got a new mobo+cpu then you might have to. I would back it up just in case.

Thanks a lot man, I have another question...The motherboard for a dream computer I want to buy is an Asus A8N 32-SLI-Deluxe NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard / Audio / PCI Express / SLI / Dual Gigabit LAN / S/PDIF / USB 2.0 / Serial ATA / Dual RAID, link here

I have an 80GB HDD with windows xp SP1 installed on it..I want to buy a bigger HDD to back all my stuff up, i realize ill have to reinstall everything, but if I want to take that HDD and put it on another computer, could I install windows on it...Or have to buy another HDD and then bring the files over..

you would have to put all the files on a seperate hdd, so you could pplug your new hdd in to ur computer as a master and your old hdd as slave, instal windows on your new hdd and you would have all your info on that old hdd.

Hmm sorta sounds confusing..So if I were to take say the 300GB HDD and put that into my old comp wit my old 80gig and then back up all those files onto the 300, then the thing i believe you explained is, that i can take that 300 out and put it into a newer more powerful comp, as a master, then install windows on it...if i do that, all my files will b there? aferwards wud i be able to take the 80 and put it in as a slave
