my mother board has a cd with a amd athlon 64 driver. what does this do, and is it neccescary? its a very large file and id rather not install it if i dont have to..

Very large? My Abit came with one too but it wasn't anything large at all. I beleive it's for the "Cool and Quiet" technology... I might be wrong but both my desktop and laptop had something.

The driver is in the ballpark of 30K. Dont quite seeing that as being massive.

hmmm, i just reinstalled windows for the first time, i do this every couple months, but seince this is a new computer, this is my first time, i just installed it to see how big it was, its really small...........wtf 0.o, last time i installed it it showed up as a 250 meg file......i guess it shrunk....im so confused...OHH, in add/remove programs is says its over four thousand megs, 4,095., wtf....

Hmmm

Hahah....you may be reading the numbers wrong. Note that 1MB is 1024KB. 1KB is 8Kb. I am 10000% sure its not the size you are saying it is ;).

yes i know, im not reading it wrong, if anything, the computer is wrong. when i organize by size, its above anything else, including far cry and hl2.... i know its not that big but the computer thinks it that big....

It? The processor driver is located in C:\Windows\System32\Driver and you can check for yourself

in the windows/system32/drivers, its really small, but in add/remove programs its big, why?

Hahha

That is funny indeed. If only we would know what causes it. I think it's a bug of some sort in the <add/remove programs> component of Windows.

Wow thats one of the more retarded things ive seen as of late ... I know AMD procs had that option back in the K7 days but I thought that was kinda dropped... *pops his ASUS CD in the drive* .... nope my ASUS board here doesnt have any funky drivers (i.e., its not critical).

Not having an A64 system to check, are you sure you need to install that 'driver'?
I wouldnt think so. Even when i download it from the Abit Site its only 8.5MB ... taking a spin through the manual (page59) which has a similar screenshot, the Athlon64 driver isnt listed as it is above and nowhere does the manual mention installing a processor driver. Pretty safe to say its kinda useless
