processor + no fan

i ordered a stuff to put together my first self built rig. anyway, put it all together and no display.. so narrowed it down to the motherboard after testing some hardware out. however, when i was taking the stock CPU fan out of the motherboard a fan connector was being stubborn and one connector broke. so i set my comp back up after the new motherboard arrived and turned it on for a quick second just to see if anything else was potentially not working. everything turned on fine.

now onto the questions..

I ordered a new heat sink fan, since i'm going to be over clocking the E2180, seemed like best idea . but i need to get into bios and change some stuff around in the mean time, like my ram voltages and stuff so i can put my new ram in and give my friends ram back.
i've always heard never to run a cpu without the heat sink fan because it will fry quickly. is it safe just to stay in bios for about 10 minutes or will i ruin my processor? my cases built in temperature monitor was rising pretty quick for the 15 seconds it was on, so didn't want to risk it.

No, do not run your system without the use of a heat sink, no matter what you see the idiots on YouTube doing.

Without a heatsink fan, maybe, but that's risky. Without a heatsink itself, no way. It will fry in a second.

It'll be fine. If you're worried point a floor fan at it or just power the CPU fan from some source other than the motherboard. It's not going to kill itself in 15 minutes.

It is still very risky. I once forgot to plug in my fan on my heatsink and in the BIOS my temps were nearly 90C. I turned my PC off so fast, lol.

It is very risky, without proper airflow the heatsink and CPU will overheat very quickly, your processor is actually running at a high, sporadic load when in the BIOS, and even with a proper HSF your temps will climb very quickly in a few minutes.

Just wait until you get your new heatsink and fan, there's really no point in making those changes now anyways, you can't do anything else and you wont be able to determine if it will be stable or not.

Oh God. It's melting. I can feel it from here. Like the heat of 1000 Suns. Get the kids out of the house, call 911.

the temp gauge went from about 72F to 115F in the 15 seconds, wasnt sure if it would keep climbing at that rate, but wasn't gonna find out either haha.

yeah i'll probably wait it out, i would kill myself if i had to buy something else after i know that its gonna work when the part gets here. thanks for the input all

I thought the question was running without the actual heat sink, not just the fan :( In which case, yeah, that's fine for some CPU's, but older ones might still get a bit too hot for your liking.

Older ones are also more tolerant of heat, but it doesn't matter since he posted which processor he has and I already posted evidence that it's fine, so I don't know why people are still posting their paranoid speculations.

How do you guys find the time to post 20 times a day about how you need a 1200W power supply and 7 case fans in between removing your dental fillings and making your tin hats?

WTF? Did I miss something or piss you off in some way?

Cripes, I said I *misread* his Post. When I realized what he actually posted, I retracted my earlier statement and was in agreement with the consensus. Point out my 'paranoid speculation' in me saying "In which case, yeah, that's fine for some CPU's, but older ones might still get a bit too hot for your liking", because, honestly, it sounds more like me saying it's a matter of personal preference.

Jesus, some people need to GTFO their horses and stop this petty BS.

If you have to ask, you're probably wrong. I only quoted you to comment that there'd be nothing to worry about with older processors either since they're more tolerant to heat. The rest of my post was in response to others still speculating "HURR SOUNDS RISKY" after I already demonstrated that it's fine.

I expect PC to respond like that, but never you. For shame. Think whatever the hell you want, take my Post however you damn well please. However, for the record, *this* was the kind of stupid crap I thought he was referring to (hence my initial comment on the subject, again, after *I* *misread* the original Post...) not just running without a damned fan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4YPcDeyYd0

I'm done with this Thread. I have zero need/desire to let this go on any further, so if you want to keep it going, it's all you, forty. Enjoy all the assumed-further bashing you want at my expense. I won't stop you.

Holy crap imsati, are you really this thick? Here, I'll help you read step by step:

Below is my initial response to you getting all bent out of shape for no reason, I've highlighted in bold and tagged with numbers the parts I'm going to help you get past your reading deficiency with.

If you have to ask, you're probably wrong (1.). I only quoted you to comment that there'd be nothing to worry about with older processors either since they're more tolerant to heat (2.). The rest of my post was in response to others (3.) still speculating "HURR SOUNDS RISKY" after I already demonstrated that it's fine.

1. Well let's see, you asked if you had offended me in some way and then proceeded to complain about it as if the answer was yes. I responded (not even to your entire post), but directly to that sentence that if you have to ask (if I'm offended) you're probably wrong (you assumed I was offended when I wasn't). Seems the first post was not the only one you misread (why do you keep bringing that up anyway? I never commented on you misreading the first post).

2. Here's where I confirm that the only relation between my post and yours was the technical question of whether older processors are more susceptible to overheating or not.

3. I confirm (again) that the remainder of my post was directed to other people.

Now, I'm sincerely sorry that your reading deficiency has caused you to believe you're being victimized in some way. The real "stupidity that permeates this board" isn't people like me, it's children - immature children who can't accept criticism and think the world revolves around them. And I'm not literally referring to those who are underage, there are adults who fit this description and sub-18 individuals who do not, but I refer to all these people as children.

In order for these children to thrive, they'd require a forum where nobody disagrees with each other. Every post would have to zealously agree with the previous without so much as a hint of negativity, because once these children sense such, that's all they see. The rest of the post doesn't matter, because it contained something the child has met with disfavor, and naturally (as a child), the child assumes it was directed toward him or her.

Immediately the child forgets what the thread was about and is only interested in regurgitating words at the offender that the child has learned to associate with "I don't like that poster," like "troll" and "immature." Please further note that if the offender engages the child in any way, the offender is considered to be the one that is perpetuating the argument, i.e. the child is given free run to regurgitate his stupidities and the offender is not to interfere.

The child then goes on to expect that the offending poster be banned to preserve the child's rightful place on the Internet where he or she is always right (in preparation for the real world, where everyone is sure to agree with the child all the time).
