Processor Problem?

I have recently started experiencing a problem on my laptop that is more annoying than anything. What happens is when I am in either Outlook Express typing an email or when I am actually posting on this forum, the computer will pause temporarily with a delay. The cursor actually disappears for a brief second and the processor it seems revs up like an engine at the same time. Again, this causes a brief delay and keeps me from smoothly typing my document. Could the problem be that my hard drive is getting to full maybe? There are some times I have noticed when I am browsing the internet that it happens as well so it is just not only when I am typing a document. I have not noticed this problem when I am in Word and typing a document when not online at the same time. I have run several virus programs and nothing is showing up that would lead to be a virus.
I sure would like to solve this problem.

I have a HP compaq nx5000 with the following...

1.60 GHz
1 gig Ram
2 hard drive particians that are 20 MB storage space each
(The active drive has 4 MB of free space.)
