Hi, i have a dell xps 430 with a Q8300 cpu

I want to upgrade to a better cpu but i don't wish to change the motherboard etc.

budget is roughly £100

whats the best cpu to upgrade to that will definitely fit my motherboard?

i don't do a lot of gaming on my pc, but its starting to lag a bit now and getting on my nerves.

i have 8gb of ram which i think is the maximum i can have.

piriform speccy says my motherboard is;
Manufacturer Dell Inc.
Model 0G254H (CPU)
Chipset Vendor Intel
Chipset Model X48
Chipset Revision 00
Southbridge Vendor Intel
Southbridge Model 82801IR (ICH9R)
Southbridge Revision 02

thanks for help.

If you don't game then there is no sense in upgrading. Most likely all you need is some general system maintenance and possible a fresh install of windows.

What operating system are you using? Have you ran malware scan using Malwarebytes? Have you downloaded and ran Ccleaner? When was the last time you did a fresh install?

yes i have done all of the above, apart from a fresh install of windows which i will not do.
i still want to upgrade my processor though, just want to know of a better one that will fit

Ok, so you will upgrade your processor and your system will still lag because you obviously have an issue with the operating system, whether it be malware infected even though you say you have ran programs to clean it up or it just needs some general cleanup.

Malware removal process usually requires a mix of about 6 or more programs designed to remove different things.

ADWcleaner
junkware removal tool
malwarebytes
tdsskiller
combofix
rogue killer
Ccleaner
OTL

Removing embedded malware usually isn't an easy process. Your antivirus program probably won't pick up what these other programs will.

Also if your windows install is more than a couple years old, its probably time for fresh install. Windows will usually degenerate over its usage.

All I'm saying is that your wasting your money if you think a better processor will put life back into your system when you have an OS issue not a processor issue here.

thanks for your help mate.
i've only had the pc about a year and i did a fresh install of windows 7 then.

i'll give those programs a go aswell :)

reason i want to upgrade the cpu is because this pc is a good few years old, and i do play a few games but not many, and the pc does struggle a bit, so i'd still like advice on what cpu's will fit.

also, can i have more than 8gb of ram on this motherboard?

thanks again

8gb is max for that computer. Are you using onboard video or a dedicated video card? If using onboard, then that is most likely your issue. Not finding much info on what processors will work with the 430. As far as I can tell the Q9650 is the highest processor it will support.

thought 8gb was the most i could use

no i use an AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics card.

i'll have a look to see if i can find a q9650 at a tidy price, thanks

If u already got q8300, it may not worth upgrade to Q9X50.

Getting a SSD as boot drive may be a better option

I agree. You can get the 250GB Samsung 840 EVO for about £90. I know your board only has SATA 3GB/s so you won't see the full potential of that SSD but it will be about 3 times faster on the read and write speeds than your average hard drive so you will see a big difference and will be worth the money.

250GB is a expensive.
Peronally would go for 120GB

Yeah, totally agree to the Samsung SSD. It had the most noticeable performance impact of all the hardware when I did upgrade my rig in full recently. You will be amazed. :)

I was just looking at your CPU which is a LGA 775. With your budget It's not worth the upgrade. It really isn't worth it. A SSD would be a better upgrade. You will have to clone your drive to the SSD. I use AOMEI Backupper.
