Processor Upgrade Help

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, it came with:

Processor, 450, 2.2, 512KB Celeron, 35W, A1
Chipset, G33/ICH9

I have upgraded to:
Processor, Pentium Dual CPU E2220 @ 2.40GHz

The problem I am having is that my current CPU does not suppport Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) or Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d). For a class that I am in I need to be able to run a dummy OS in VMWare, not MS Virtual PC, so I need this hardware assisted virtualization support on my CPU if at all possible.

Some have suggested that the Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8500 will work on my PC but I'm not sure due to the FSB speed of that processor.

Also I am not experiencing any performance issues, so is there cost effective option that I can use in my existing PC that will enable me to use the Virtualization Technology that I want?

Thank you, Jeremy

the owners manual says it supports core 2 duos and even quads, but it doesn't say the series, and normally they don't support all of them, since new ones will come out, but i guess it should run it.

Well, given how old the hardware is, I would not attempt to install a 45nm wolfdale CPU as the board might not support it. Also it probably doesn't support 1333 FSB so an E8500 is very risky and expensive risk.

Your best bet would be to find an E6600 or E6700. It is also 65nm like the E2220. The only real difference is 1066 FSB, but it still has a good chance of working in that motherboard. BUT all quads are atleast 1066 FSB so if your board supports quads it should support 1066 FSB.

$40 for an E6600-

Although it's the same clockspeed, the E6600 is still a decent upgrade for you because it has quadruple the Cache size. And of course, virtualization.

Thanks bro, just what I wanted to know.
