Processor Upgrade

I am looking to upgrade the processor in my Dell Optiplex GX280. Right now it has a P4 2.8 GHz processor in it. Is this upgradeable and what is the top processor I would be able to put in this MB? From what I've read the HT (single core) Pentium 4 570 at 3.8Ghz would be the max I could put in it. Is this correct? Also, is there alot involved in changing out the processor, or is it just pop one out and pop the other one in? heh

well the highest P4 that is compatible with that mobo, goes to 3.2ghz, and costs over 100$, so to me it really won't be worth the upgrade...

Yah, that's a little pricey. Although I figured it would cost over $100. Maybe I should look into another complete system instead. *Shrugs*

How much was the 570 you found?

yah that would probably be best, you can get some nice dual core systems for decent prices now days...

Yeah for a price comparison you could buy a E7300 45nm Dual Core for 110 bucks :)

Time to shop for a new PC!

I didn't actually find one with a price, I just read that was the max. Although I did find this one Intel Pentium 4/ 3.06 GHz Hyper Threading Technology Processor
Pentium, Pentium 4 - 533MHz - 512 KB L2 Cache - Socket 478 for $87.99 on Nextag. I wonder if that one would work.

build your own computer. You can use alot of the stuff from that computer and add a few new things and save alot of money. I guess brand names like Dell tend to like making their stuff so its harder to upgrade. Hopefully you may just be able to upgrade the motherboard and processor.

Yah the thought of using rebuilding using parts from the Dell has crossed my mind. But I think I would rather just start from scratch and build a monster and use the Dell as a network terminal. But you're right about Dell, I'm sure they want to keep things in their own upgrade and parts center.

Yeah all you really need to do is upgrade the motherboard cpu and ram.

Everything else can be reused. If your looking for a dependable board and don't plan to SLI/Crossfire you could try this

The E7-E8 line can overclock well past 3.0ghz so its a good dual-core...the E8400 has more cache then the E7300 but costs 50 bucks more.
