Processor upgrade

Hello all I am looking to upgrade my processor. I currently have a AMD Athlon64x2 dual core 3800t, 2.0 ghz. now with this processor I am assuming that i have to stay within the amd dual core family, Is this correct? And if so the two processors that i found that appear to be the fastest are the AMD Athlonx2 6000t 3.1 ghz, 1mb cache 2000 mhz Fsb, brisbane, dual core, oem, socket AM2. And the AMD Athlon x2 7750 black edition, 2.7 ghz, 1mb L2 cache, 2mb L3 cache 1800mhz (3600MT/s) fsb, kuma. dual core, unloaked multiplier, retail, socket AM2t. these two processor's are both the same price so i am not sure of which one to go for. I know i also need to upgrade my ram which is what i am going to do first. i currently have three 512mb sticks for 1.5gb total. how do i tell what kind of ram sticks i can use? And how do i tell how much ram i can put in total? Eventually i am also going to upgrade the sound card but that is not for awhile down the road. What would everybody recomend for a good sound card that has the ability to output digital sound? My video card has been upgraded to a GE Force 9800 with aditional power supply so that is also where i like it. Any thoughts or comments or answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jonas

ok the 7750 will not work. the other one may or may not work. the 3800 came in 939 and am2 if im not mistaken so you would need to know that first. if its 939 thats the best processor and if not you would be a bit better off with a 6000+. now if its 939 you use ddr ram (PC3200) and if its am2 you would use ddr2 ram (PC6400).

for me sound cards dont matter so i know nothing about them. onboard has always worked for me.

When you refer to 939 what are you refering to? Pardon my ignorance but it has been a long time since i have had to deal with computers and the technolgy has almost left me behind. My motherboard is a Asus M2M68-LA

Ohh and i did figure out i can use ddr2 ram i have four slots for a maximum of 8 gig of ram but only if you run a 64 bit system. i am only running a 32 bit system so i was just informed that i can only run 3 to 3.5 gig. does this sound true?

What you do is install 4 GB of memory. The O/S and hardware use some of that memory. That's where the 3 gb figure comes from. It is the useable portion of the total memory. Buy 2 2GB DIMMS and install them in the first pair of DIMM slots. You'll be good to go.

Okay if this is the case you say to put 2 2gb ram chips in the first two slots, right now i have 3 512 mb ram chips is the third one acually doing anything? and if i buy 2 2gb ram chips can i use my 2 512mb ram chips in the other two slots or will this be a waste? thanks

Also i have been looking at these memory sticks and there is lik 30 different name brands for each one is there anyone that is better that anybody recomends?

DIMMS are used in pairs. If you have a single DIMM in a slot with nothing in the paired slot, then it isn't doing anything. Just dump all the memory and put 2 2gb DIMMS in one socket pair. This assumes your board supports 2 gb DIMMS, of course.

I'm not an expert at memory brands. I've used Kingston memory for years and found it to be very reliable. I can recommend that brand.
