Processor Upgrade

I'm upgrading an older computer's processor soon and I was wondering what is the best processor I could replace the old one with. The computer is a Gateway GT5026E and according to the components page under motherboards, the Specifications Page says the socket is a LGA775. From what I understand I should be able to put a Core 2 Duo but i do not want to get it and the chip not work. It also may hold a Xeon chip according to wikipedia. Either way, I am wondering what is the best Intel chip money can buy to put into the slot. The original processor was a Pentium D 820. Thanks.

well the page says the mobo only supports up to a pentium d, but there are much better ones out now, but it doesn't say the other stuff, but i doubt it will support anything newer, you might be about out of luck.
 
Oh yes, The best processor that system will support is a pentium D. I would actually save your money and build a new system.
 
There were a lot of lower end Socket 775 motherboards that would not support the higher end Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processors. These lower end motherboards would only support Pentium D and the obsolete single-core Pentium 4 processors.
 
yeah maybe ill just leave it as is, i have better laptops but i just wanted to spice up the desktop. no big deal. Thanks everyone.
 
If you already have a pentium D, probably no worth it too much.

It would be a pretty large upgrade from an 820, but those CPU's run REALLY hot. It's nearly 1ghz faster, it has double the L2 cache per core, and also it has hyper threading. It's the king of the pentium D's.


Or the 955 has all the same features just a little less clockspeed for nearly 1/2 the price-
