Processor Upgrade

I have an old Dell Optiplex 745 with a Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13Ghz and 6gigs of ddr2 ram, I want to upgrade to an E8400 3Ghz would the computer be able to handle it?

Nope, pretty sure you are stuck with the 6000 series cpu's.

You might be able to slide a 7 series such as the E7600 in there.

Kill it with fire. Get an i7 based machine. It's faster.

Do they have i7 machines in the same '$5 eBay upgrade' class?

It's honestly a couple bucks for a noticeable upgrade.

Yea I already have a gaming pc i was just going to upgrade this old thing as a small little project but are there any processor recomandations? I think there are some core 2 quads that are 1066 fsb.

Problem being is that the pc doesn't support quad core processors.

if you google Dell Optiplex 745 CPU list, you will find some thread being discuss in other forum.
My best guess is you may be able to upgrade to Q6600, but I can't say certainly.

The Q965 chipset supports quads, but it may depend on the Dell bios. If you want to make sure, an E8400 is the way to go.

Swap to luinux (i prefer ubuntu), and stick in a quad core. Any BIOS issues can be solved through Ubuntu easier than any other OS's handling of BIOS. But, you should change the motherboard to something that native handles newer quad cores. I run a Sabtertooth X58, serves me amazing.
