Processors, etc.

Well, I have a Windows 95 and it's a Gateway 2000, and I feel that after 2 years of no use, it's about time for an upgrade. But for many of the things I do, I really need the processor power. And seeing as the main Windows-compatable processors are Intel and Athlon (sp?), I'm worndering which one is better. Any ideas?

EDIT: feel free to suggest any other computer parts that can be recomended.

BTW: If it probably will end up costing more to refurbish this old comp that buy/build a new one, please tell me.

If your a gamer, go with an AMD. If your not a gamer, go with the Intel. The type of AMD or Intel depends on what exactly your going to be doing with the computer and how big your budget is.

I would be playing some games, doing some video editing, web design, etc. I want it to really be fast and reliable, I guess
This would all be done in Linux, unless I do save up enough to get a Windows CD. I'm realy looking for something less that $300

with a real low buget like that... i'd say just upgrade your memory and possibly a newer processor/cpu that can fit into your motherboard.

and sure there is no problem with using linux. however you might be limited to certain games if you plan on gaming a lot in the future. as far as processing... what typical programs would u be using and what would u typically be using?

Or, I wouldn't bother with upgrading your old computer, if you're fine with not getting a new monitor, you could probably get a whole tower through the Dell outlet store for about that price...
