Which is better for gaming, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+dual core-2.2GHz or Intel Pentium D 940 3.2GHz, 4MB, 800MHZ FSB?

Also, is a 256 MB DDR ATI radeon X 1600XT, TV-out and DVI graphics card good for gaming?

Thanks, im trying to make the best computer possible w/o building it for $1800 or less. :)

While we are on the subject, I saw in walmart a hp priced at $1,000usd with a pentium d 940 and one priced at like $800usd with an amd x24200. Isn't the 4200 better?

The X1600 is a poor gaming card for a system with that budget. An X1900XT would be a better choice. The X2 4400+ is the better CPU, but for a gaming-oriented machine you'd be better to downgrade it to an X2 3800+/4200+ and put the extra into the video card.

What are the other specs you're looking at?

Despite being a few months old, Computer Specs 101 is still a good starting place.

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Windsor 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor - $585
Motherboard: MSI K9N SLI Platinum Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - $133
RAM: pqi TURBO 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel - $120
Video Card: XFX Geforce 7950GX2 1GB - $609
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS - $75
Harddrive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3300822AS 300GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $100
Optical Drive:get this in either silver, black, or beige, depending on what case you get... - $35
Power Supply: Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply - $70
Case:any of these would work (lets say $65)

Approx:$1792

and if you don't want to spend that much, and want to spend a little less, then get this processor (which would bring the price down to around $1500 something)

now i know you said you don't want to build, but if you want to get the best for your money, then u should build... this setup would cost prolly around $3000 prebuilt... mebbe around $2800...
