Processors

Okay guys, I'm pretty computer illiterate, although I want to learn so much about computers I just don't know too many people who know too much about them.

Here is my question. I'm getting a new computer for gaming and I've been looking at a bunch of computers and there's a bunch of processors out there I dont understand.

Whats the difference between the AMD Athlon 64 X2, and the Intel Pentium D.
Is one better than the other? Which one would work best for hardcore gaming? And could you guys explain the differences to me.

Also, is there a processor out there that is better than those two or is better suited for gaming? If so, tell me.

Thank you for your help,
Farrion

Dual Core CPU Review: AMD X2 vs. Intel Pentium D - hardCOREware.net

The Athlon64 X2 is in most cases cheaper, faster, cooler, and consumes less power than the Pentium D. It is compatible with the current generation of motherboards, making it easier to upgrade to. Video encoding is slightly better, and gaming performance is a LOT better, as is audio encoding.

The one thing the Pentium D has going for it is a superior chipset. Make no mistake; Intel makes great chipsets. The 945 series along with the ICH7 southbridge is probably faster and more stable than anything NVIDIA, ATI, or ULi have to offer right now.

Welcome to the computer forum!

the AMD is better for gaming. dual core means its like their is 2 processor. Intel is more for miltitask.
then you get some numbers....for example +3200...the higher, the better.
but i don't know much about CPU though....

When will the duo start being put in computers? I saw it on a laptop, but didn't know it was making its way on to desktops.
