i have got a pretty wild stereo, and i've got that reltek HD audio program, but it doesn't allow me to set it up to run true 5/6.1. am i just needing a new sound card, or do i need a program to allow me to do that, because the sound quality is pretty bad, and it only runs 2 channel or mono 6.1. i messed around and if i plug the powered speakers in the back of it then i can adjust what each set gets, but i've just got a single orange coax cable going from the back of my pc to my stereo. any help would be awesome, thanks guys

Does your stereo support discreet analog inputs? Your motherboard audio sounds like it has discreet outputs. To get surround audio from the Digital Coax/Optical ports your on-board audio must support Dolby Digital or DTS live. If it doesn't then you will need to grab ffdshow. You can use this program to output a Dolby Digital 5.1 bitstream.

yeah, sorry about bad wording...by mono 6.1 i mean i have all 6 speakers working. but they all put out the same tone, it's monotone if you will. and it sounds pretty bad. to be honest 2.1 sounds better because at least it's in stereo. but i would ideally like true 5/6.1 as in each speaker puts out it's own sound, like dolby, if i watch a movie/game each speaker puts out sound relative to the situation. like when i play halo on my xbox if i get shot in the back, the rear speakers rumble. that sorta thing. and i'm going to download this program, and see how it works. and thanks a lot Zatharus, you have been a very big help to me man.
Huh...that is weird. How do you have your system hooked up right now? Do you have all the proper outputs from your sound card sent to the proper inputs on your speaker system? Also, what equipment are you using?

i have the coax cable hooked up from the back of the motherboard to my home theater system. and for equiptment i've got a pretty new yamaha 6.1 reciever, it's one of the nicer ones. with sony towers/powered sub all that good stuff...it sounds killer through my xbox. the tone is very off when i use the computer. it's too high pitch, and if i up the bass, it goes form quiet, to soo loud it rattles my chest and hurts my ears without even really adjusting it much. and as for setting it up for 6.1, i have that realtek audio program, and i set it to run off of coax, and to run i think 5.1, i don't think 6.1 was an option through it. and it still sounds like crap. i'm not sure if i need a new sound card or not, but i looked on the other parts of the forum, and heard mixed reviews about the effectiveness of them. one guy said that it's all in your mind, and they are effectively useless. but, if it'll help, they aren't too steep to get one.
Do you have the option to run Dolby Live in the Realtek control panel? If not, setting your sound output to digital will only result in stereo audio. You will need Dolby or DTS live to get surround audio out via SPDIF.
As for the tonal balance of your computer audio, do you have an EQ settings tweaked in the Realtek control panel? You probably want to run it flat for audio through your stereo.

No, i dont have the option to run dolby live on the realtek control panel. and right now i have the eq set to rock, i tried putting it on flat, but it just sounded worse. i messed with my stereo a little, i'll tweak it more to see if i can get it better, but idk if i'll get very far.
OK. In that case you can try ffdshow like I mentioned before for AC3 encoding of your audio. Or, you can hook up your analog audio outputs to your receiver if it has discreet inputs for surround.

well, i finnaly had time to try that program, and i will have to say it sounds better. it seems that the highs are a little more under control, and the bass sounds a little more reasonable, i tweaked my home theatre system too a bit, that might have helped a lil bit as well. and i'm not sure what you mean by the analog output, the only audio output i know of on my computer is the dig. coax., and the 6.1 terminals in the back.
If your stereo has discreet surround inputs they would probably coaxial "RCA" jacks. You can get a stereo mini to RCA adapter to use them if you do. Each of the analog I/O on your sound card are set up in pairs. Usually, they would be: Left/Right, Rear-Left/Right, Center/Sub, and in 7.1 systems you would also have Side-Left/Right.
