Programs not opening...

Hi all...

mum's computer experiencing probs... Fires up OK and is stable, can open things like My Documents and My computer but if she tries to open anything else it flashes up on the screen then closes itself... Was trying to get her to do a system restore but when she tries to open this application, it does the same thing... System restore screen flashes up for a fraction of a second then closes...

Any thoughts on what may cause this...??? I have had her run AdAware & spybot, Nortons has the previously mentioned issues...

i had the same problem with my old puter, but i couldnt open anything at all
i had to end up reinstalling windows, but i'm curious
as to what causes this to happen, anyone??

OK, how much info do you actually need...??? Have spoken to her and she had the following to say:

Computer was built by a local store to what they believed were appropriate specs for her to do email, banking and a bit of surfing... The only info she could provide was the following:

P4 3.2Ghz(mother board not specified)
512Mb pc3200
Onboard graphics
100Gb HDD(brand not specified)
LG DVD/CD burner

She can't open it to get more info as the box is secured with tamper proof screws and she is 4000km away so I can't do it for her...

Buzz, she can't download it, no windows will stay open for her to do it... Are there any things of the top of your head which we could look into...??? She doesn't want to have to go back to the store as she was stuffed around a lot when buying it... ie. pirate copy of windows initially installed, only a trial of MS Office instead of the full version, CD rom instead of a DVD burner... The list goes on and she had to fight hard to get what she was advised and quoted for...
