Hello,

Over the past few days Ive been searching for a Projector that could replace my Monitor. I don't know much about Resolution and all of the technical information but I'm wondering which Projector would be the "best" to use as a Monitor screen that can be around 100" or higher. Best Buy has many projectors, but again I don't know which is best for my use. I may also play some Xbox 360 on the projector as well. One from best buy that looks affordable and High end resolution is http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8594899&st=projector&lp=8&type=product&cp=1&id=1190678793468
Thanks for the help, I hope to hear back soon. :D

Projectors have some expensive long term costs. Especially bulbs which last about 3 years and are gonna set you back $300-$400 dollars. Its a lot cheaper to go with a LCD or DLP television

What exactly is a DLP television, and I am aware that the bulbs only last around 2-3k hours each. I currently have a LCD but it's just not big enough.... plus i would like to sit on my massage recliner with a wireless keyboard :)

There are three types of HD tv available these days: DLP, LCD, and Plasma.

DLP is the most affordable because there is hardly anything to them except a color wheel and a bulb. They can be made into larger screens as a result, and again, they are affordable. When the bulb goes out after 2-3 years they are about 60 dollars for a replacement. Can be used as computer monitor as long as a single image is not left on the screen for extended periods of time. images can be burn in.

LCD's are 'Liquid Crystal' which means there is a fluid inside that creates the picture. They have the longest life expectancy but they are more expensive at larger display sizes. They have better picture then DLP. When the screen goes out, the Liquid Crystal can be replaced but only at specialty repair shops or through the manufacture for upwards over $300-$400. Life expectancy is about 5-8 years. Can be used as computer monitor and images can not be burned in.

Plasma presents the best possible picture but are also the most pricey. They cannot be made into super large sizes and cannot be replaced once the plasma gas inside them dissipates over time. Life expectancy is 4-5 years. Cannot be used as computer monitor, images wont burn in.

Although that was true several years ago, there have been some great improvements in plasma screens recently. Most of the new top brand s have integrated anti-burn-in technology, and the life expectancy is a lot higher now. Almost all manufacturers are listing 60,000 hours of screen time on their plasmas. And the idea that they lose their gas is just not true, although it might have been some years ago.

Are plasmas the best choice for computers and gaming? I dunno. But I wouldn't be worried.

I was not aware they had made any improvements to them. Last I heard gaming and monitor use was still a no-no when it came to plasmas, but like you mentioned, there could have been some big changes in their technology. Regardless, plasmas still represent the best picture with the highest cost.

If you have your mind set on a projector, go with it.

If you want something large for a good price, I'd go with an LED DLP TV. I have one and the picture looks amazing. It comes with a VGA port on it, so all I need to clone my computer is a 25 ft VGA cable.

Could you point me toward maybe a site with some decent LED DLP TVs? Or maybe the one you bought. I would like one for a monitor that could be anywhere from 40"-70" with a rather low price. I don't really know the sizes so if this is far off please advise me.

Thanks for all of the other posts guys, but plasma is probably a bad choice for me.

I have a 57" Samsung HL-S5679W. I can't get much more product info tonight because my internet time lock kicked in (parents reinstalled the security suite and forgot to disable it). Search for it on CNET. They have a good review of it.

Interesting. I didn't think that posted! :D

Anyway, you can get a complete product overview for my TV at CNET (ignore the "high price". I got mine at Bernie's for I think $2100.)
