Hello all, Ive come to pick your brains again...

To cut a long story short I have a spare DL360 Proliant G3 server, Its currently in a RAID1 configuration with 2x 36.4gb SCSI ultra320 15k hot swap drives running Windows server 2003.

But my question is, Is there a simple way of buying two brand new 74gb+ SCSI HDDs and using them in the server with out having to reinstall the NOS.

I was thinking of this but I'm sure it may not work out as planned...

Turning the server on, replacing one of the 36gb drives for a 74gb drive> let the server rebuild the array> then swapping the 2nd 36gb drive for the other 74gb drive... then this is where it may get a bit tricky... Resize the RAID array to use the 74gb rather than the 36gb it had before :confused:

Anyone got any ideas? or should I just put the new drives in and start from scratch??
 
The best thing to do, is create an image of the server that is currently up and running because when you rebuild the RAID you wipe it. Are you trying to migrate to RAID 5? Then build your new RAID and image it back over. That is what I would recommend, and that way you have an image back up just in case.

Also, it is ideal to use the same HDs in a RAID. Same specs, and ultimately same brand is most ideal. I am not sure exactly how swapping out a different drive and letting it rebuild would work, because I have always used the same drives

Do you have an imaging solution set up, or available? The easiest thing may be (maybe not so cheap) is just add a 4 drive RAID 5 (3 drives + 1 spare) in addition to your RAID 1 array. Those Proliant servers usually come with dual channel scsi cards.
 
Cool I'll look into Ghost, would there be any issues with something like that with RAID?

Nope, a RAID is still seen as a HD as far any imaging or installer might see it as. As long as it is set up properly it will show as one large HD.
