my niece just bought a new customized desktop, and we're wondering how to properly use it just enough to show if there's some hardware malfunction, until the warranty expires.
 
Check the RAM using Memtest. Let this test run for about 6 hours.
Check the hard drive with the diagnostics tool from the manufacturer.
Run Prime95 and monitor the temps.
Keep an eye out for blue screens. When you do see one, run bluescreenview and post the results here.
