what would be the minimum power supply to safely run a core duo machine or pentium dual core, with three video cards? One PCI X16 the other two cards in plain PCI slots.. none sli anything. Would 500watts cut it?

There is more to it than wattage. Amperage, Efficiency and Quality also need to be taken into account.

But a 500w from a decent brand (Corsair, Zalman, PC Power & Cooling, OCZ, Seasonic etc) will be enough.

PCI video cards are generally old and don't consume a lot of power. probably 100 watts each at the most.

Even the latest cards use about 100W.

Please post the full intended specs. Then we can advise on a suitable PSU.

I am not sure on intended specs at this time. The build would uses three video cards (or just two at first) for the purpose of running multiple monitors either 4 or 6 screens. I am considering this build out of scrap parts I can find anywhere on the cheap*

deff daul channel 800mhz ram as a minimum, core duo the old ones prolly (to get cheap used) socket 775 mobo also used. standard 7200rpm HD, cheapo dvd burner from newegg. The video cards whatever can run 19s or 20s screens.. I have seen nividia 8600 for 20$ to $30 on here. Something older would even work, this computer is only for multitasking and no video games so a lot of video power is not needed.

Even the latest cards use about 100W.

less than that. pci-e 2.0 x16 slots can provide a MAX of 75 watts to a card, and since its only pci, im guessing its less

^^+1 on bomberboy's links, that's am incredible price for an ocz 700watt
