Proper way to shut down Windows??

Acer netbook with Windows Starter. What is the proper way to shut down Windows on this netbook? Just about every time when I close the netbook to charge it the next time I turn it on it tells me that windows was not properly shut down. I know this is a dumb question but i'm new to netbooks and charging them. Thanks for your help!

Well when you simply close the lid, it goes into standby/sleep. If it doesn't shut down after several hours then the battery must die and just kill the machines active session.

To shut down Windows, click the start menu and then just click "Shut Down" on the bottom right of the start menu.
