Proposed gaming rig

So Ive got my eye on this computer - mainly for gaming and internet browsing:

Intel Core2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz
Intel DP965LT Motherboard
2GB DDR2 533 MHz RAM
18x Dual Layer DVD Writer
nVidia Geforce 7900GS 256 MB
500W PSU
19" Widescreen LCD
...and other sundries like keyboard, mouse, XP Home etc.

My question is: how powerful of a gaming rig is this? (for example, how would Oblivion run on a high graphic setting) Is it suitable for current games (and perhaps next generation games) to be played smoothly at high graphics or should I look for something better?

i think you will be able to max oblivion without a prob dude, my old rig wasn't as good as that and it could almost max oblivion. games such as crysis you may struggle to reach the top point and also there is no dx10 gfx card in your rig. fair enough the dx10 cards are pretty pricey but you get wat u pay for...

I would highly advise getting Vista instead of XP (XP does not support DX10, and there is no way it ever will) and a DX10 graphics card.

I say that as in 6/10 months time, you will start seeing awesome DX10 games coming out, and will regret getting XP and a DX9 graphics card.

I would get vista, not just for DX10 but because it can use the full capacity of the processor. Otherwise, sounds like a good system

Why are you getting 533Mhz DDR2?? That is some low end memory there - no good for gaming at all. The quantity (2GB) is great though. Also, If you are going to get a 7900, I'd go for the GT or even a 7950. Also, don't even bother getting XP - Vista is the way to go. I would say bump your PSU to 550W.

I was definitely thinking about getting vista though, because the system charges a very cheap upgrade to home premium - but Im not sure if its worth it right now because all the drivers havent been properly upgraded and such (well at least in Australia anyways).

What would be a fairly cheap but still powerful dx10 card? If I ended up getting Vista but keeping the 7900 card, would that have any sort of performance impact on games?

DDR2 ram => use PC6400

Why are you using Intel MB?
Also it will be better to state which brand are you using...

yeh vista and a dx10 card, maybe 8800gts 320mb, then your system will definately handle most games at full settings and also cope with new dx10 games.

The intel boards aren't bad but I would get an asus personally ... however I think an Intel board wouldn't be bad. a 7900gs is a good card for gaming. It's a great intermediary card until the DX10 cards get cheaper, that's why I got one. I personally like it a lot though, it works good for my gaming needs.

I just read and article in Maximum PC that there arent gonna be any DX10 games that are any good out until middle of 07.

How much is this rig?

It costs $1650 (Australian) not including the upgrade to Vista, which is actually a pretty decent price. Does anyone know if theres a decent dx10 gaming/vista-ready rig that costs somewhere in this ballpark?? (I can convert to AU if necessary)
