The following builds do not include Windows, monitor, speakers, headphones, kb, mouse, or just about anything else that is down to personal preference. Prices are the average high-street price. All parts are rough at the moment. Builds are for overall performance, e.g. not just editing, gaming, or rendering, but a mix of all 3. Prices include VAT and/or tax. Dollar prices may seem a little high, but stuff is cheaper in the US. I haven't put Euros yet, but will if requested.

PC budget Reccomendations

£250 ($400) PC:
This cheap-but-upgradable PC will suffice for browsing the web, and simple office tasks. Do not expect to be doing anymore than basic flash browser games on this PC, and conventional gaming is a no-no. Basic Apps like on-demand TV download services should be fine, though you may want to turn the resolution down. Basic 360p and possibly 480p YouTube videos should run smoothly. Though I would reccomend Linux on a PC with this low budget, Windows Aero should be OK. I wouldn't reccomend overclocking in a build like this with a stock cooler.

£500 PC ($800)
This incredibly upgradable PC is perfect for decent framerates and fairly high-quality media at a low price. Browsing the web should be extremely slick with very little delay when loading content (depening on internet connection, of course) Windows 7 should run smoothly with Aero. You can have loads of tabs open in your browser without the system visibly slowing down. Expect to be gaming with mainly medium detail @ 1440x900 and some 1680x1050. While this setup supports up to 3 monitors, it simply hasn't got the graphics horsepower to power all those pixels at higher resolutions, so I'd stay away from multi-monitor setups. YouTube videos should be fine up to Full HD (1080p), where the picture may start to jitter in complex scenes. The current CPU is extremely overclockable, hitting 4.6 on air. The aftermarket cooler should further improve Overclocking.

Here's where it starts rollin'. This mid-range PC is perfect for gaming in high detail @ 1680x1050 in more demanding games, and up to 1920x1080 and beyond for less GPU-hungry games. There is an eminently overclockable quad-core CPU included in this build with a generous 8MB of shared L3 cache for all you multitasking junkies. This PC should run most apps with ease, YouTube will play in Full HD and browsing the web will be a doozy. The aftermarket cooler will help keep temps low when overclocking, and the case is pretty nice, too.

This PC is for the user who wants a very powerful PC that doesn't cost the earth. Ideally this PC will be used as a general "budget" powerhouse, [The PC] should cope with HD photo/video editing OK, and will process RAW images faster than you can say "Core i7". Basic tasks will be swept aside with ease, and gaming @ 1920x1080 with fairly demanding games will give you pretty awesome framerates. Less graphically demanding games will be maxed out with ease.

£1500 PC ($2400)
Quite similar to the £1250 PC, you'll be the envy of your mates with this amazingly quick PC that includes an SSD on which Windows is installed for amazing boot-up and loading times. Gaming on this PC will be "limited" to very high detail @1920x1080 and ultra @2500x1600 for less demanding games. Multi-montior setups are fine. Any video will play at full HD and there shouldn't be a jitter. Browsing the web will not feel much different from the previous builds; lightning fast and snappy. There is oodles of storage space here too, for all your media.

Looks pretty good. One point is that not everyone wants a sound card in their PC. I've seen plenty of people with insane SLI/Xfire graphic cards and i7s with no sound card. I would suggest making all sound cards a possible ad on to the list. Also instead of purely going by price points, you should consider also going by uses. For example, you have your:

Basic Workstation
Budget Gaming PC
Mid-range Gaming PC
High-end Gaming PC
High-end Workstation
Workstation/Server
Mediacenter PC
Portable Gaming PC

etc etc. Each type of PC would be special in their own way. For example:

Workstation PCs have to look professional. People don't generally want a flashy computer with a side panel sitting in a professional working environment. They also have to be quiet, so stock heatsink is a no go. Furthermore they don't need high end graphic cards, and if they do use graphics cards they should be passively cooled.

Gaming PCS you have pretty much down so I won't elaborate.

Mediacenter PCs should have dedicated sound cards, a midrange graphics card, midrange CPU and probably even a TV tuner. They should also use desktop style HTPC cases.

Portable gaming PCs should use either mATX or miniITX cases. They should include everything in a gaming PC but still fit in a small footprint case.


That's just my suggestion. If you want we can work on this together as I have some experience with HTPCs, compact gaming computers and workstations.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll be doing this one on my own. I agree that specialized PC classes too would be better, I think I might add them; thanks for the suggestion. They'll be here by tomorrow evening, probably
 
Personally I agree about the sound cards; I'm one of those people who thinks onboard HD audio is "good enough". But so many people want/need a soundcard (mainly gamers now) that I thought to include them
 
It's good, but I do agree with what dudiknowthat said, price points are great but specialised builds would be even better :)

Everything else is fine.
 
I've got a spreadsheet of systems that I have together for whenever a customer asks for them. If you want me to send you a copy to add to your list, just pm me. But I warn you, they are updated regularly, and this thread will have to be, I think a guideline of what you need for purpose, and roughly what you can look to get for your money would be better than specific builds
 
Did you look at Praetor's 101 thread? I'd like it to have that type of format. You don't have to have builds in $100 increments, but it needs to have links to each item, for example. If you want, you could make this exclusively a UK thread with links to ebuyer and other UK sites. It would be really nice if you did both an American (with newegg/TD/microcenter links) and UK version of each build. Does that make sense?

Sound card is optional. We could include a list of 3-5 recommended cards somewhere in the guide.
 
I honestly feel like a 101 like this should be a group effort. Things change far too quickly for one person to keep everything updated. Perhaps fastdude could be the moderator of it, but I really don't see him being capable of keeping this up-to-date as needed. No offense.
 
On mobile so i have to keep short, but one possible thought could have five members or so each have a post in the thread, and each member be responsible for their budget range.

None Taken. I'm seeing how it's going at the moment with just one, but I can see how much effort it would be to keep everything updated, especially as I haven't even given links to all yet.

I don't think it would be a good idea to give links, it would be easier to give a list of recomended retailers, and parts for the rpice range. If you look at UK, if you go to Scan, OcUK and ebuyer, generally Scan are cheapest, especially when you factor shipping in, ebuyer have a fair number of products that are cheaper too though, and when OcUK have an offer on, they can slip in under the price of Scan. But, the companies change their prices all the time. You could say this part is cheapest here, and a day later, it is cheaper elsewhere. Rather than making it updating every week or two, you would have to update 3 or 4 times a week, just to check prices.

I do think it would be a very good idea to make it a combined effort though, I would be happy to help out with that

Fair points, but seeing as I've done links for most things already, I think I'll finish them off, and put a "These links are not final, any of these products from retailers x,y,z will be good" then give some additional info. As for US, only decent retailer that is consistently good is Newegg, AFAIK

yeah, I also reckon combined effort maintained by 4 or so people would be good idea, nice thinking bomber
