Hello,

Im going to be running game server's and I've found a couple machine's so far that I think will be sufficient to run them. However, reading reviews of both machine's I still find it difficult to sum up which would be the better machine. Any view's from people already running these type's of server's would be great.

The 1st machine is:

HP Proliant DL145 with the following specs,

AMD 64 Opteron Processor 2 x AMD Opteron (Model 248) - 2.2GHz
Bus Speed 800MHz FSB
Cache 64KB L1
1MB L2
Chipset AMD Opteron 8000 Series

RAM
Standard Memory 2GB Advanced ECC DDR SDRAM
Memory Speed 333MHz DDR333/PC2700

Hard Drives
125GB Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6) 7200 rpm Non Hot-pluggable

Optical Drive
DVD-ROM

Size
Rack Mount 1U

Ports
3 x Network,1 x USB ( In the front) 1 x USB (In the back),

1 x Serial, 2 x VGA ,2 x PS/2

The 2nd machine:

DELL PowerEdge SC1425 with the following specs,

Dual (2x) Intel Xeon 3200Mhz (3.20Ghz) Processors installed.

2GB (2048MB) RAM (4x 512MB ECC DDR2 modules)

160GB SATA Hard Drive

CD-ROM Drive

Dual On-Board gigabit ethernet network adapters

1U rackmount

If anyone would shed some light on why each machine would be better than the other it would really help a lot.

Thanks for your time.

game servers do not require that kind of power, you can easily dedicate an extra desktop machine and be done with it. What exactly are you trying to accomplish here? Are you going to be hosting several different instances of dedicated servers on one machine online or what?

Hello,

Yes thats right, Im looking to put a 1U server in a colo and host 4 or more servers on the one machine.
Being that the games are Steam based increasing the servers tic will make for better more realistic gameplay and also chew CPU. Thats why I want to go bigger than needed.

Ok, that makes more sense then if you are running multiple instances on one machine. I would go with a newer Xeon first off, those Opterns, while they were bad ass when they first came out, AMD hasn't updated them really at all. Intel, has redesigned the Xeons from the Core up, so they are better processors for the money, unless you are on a budget then AMD would be better since they are cheaper.

Do any of these servers have video cards? If they don't then you will have to administer them remotely through some sort of terminal access, which can be annoying. I will assume these are going in a server closet locked away somewhere so you don't have to hear them running constantly. So, you will want to remote access them anyway, and having a GUI always helps.

Spec wise, unless you are getting a steal on the HP Proliant, I would say the Dell spec for spec is a far superior machine.

Yes they both have a video card.. just enough to set them up locally. Once they are in the colocation everything will be done remotely. The HP is around $350 and the dell around the $500 mark. Being familiar with Remote Desktop Connection I was going to use this for remote access, but Im also toying with using RealVNC.

Im planning on running Server NT on the machine. Do you think this will cause any probs? I know its an older OS but I already have and I would rather not have to buy another OS.
