Protecting Hardrive

i have an external hd and i dont want anything to happen to it (security wise) and i would like to password it, how could i do this? it has my work, work on it and its very valuable to me? it's all backed up but i would like just to be sure that its safe. thanks!

If someone removed the drive from your system the information for the most part would be readily accessible since any password information would be stored on the primary for permission for that system to access. You would need to use an encryption software on all data you stored on the drive itself. The program itself may have a password setting option. If the drive was removed and connected to another system the data would be inaccessible due the encryption coding already inplace.

Have you thought about compressing the stuff into ZIPs with passwords? There are probably better ways to do the whole drive, but that's the first method that popped into my head.

The problem here is to find a security method that effects data on the drive directly in order to secure from being accessed if you have any concern about unauthorised access on the current system or theft of hardware. You would then be able to access it with a program installed to the primary drive. Data compression with encryption would be an idea that The_Other_ Once has briefly touched on here.
