I am just curious why do people set up proxy servers on their computers?

well depending on what they do. proxies can be used for many diferent uses. baisicly when you use a proxy the site doesnt see your ip it sees the proxy ip.

No, they dont know. That's the point. If the proxy is a public ip, and well known.. they could be aware. It is a way to surf anonymously. Also some filters for work firewallas can be bypassed using different types of proxies.

In IE go tool, internet options, connections tab, lan settings, fill in the proxy server there...

a hosting company wouldn't let me sign up because it thought i was under a proxy, lol
