PS2 won't load Grand Turismo 3

I got this PS2 as a hand-me-down because the previous owner couldn't get it working. I worked on it for a bit and I've been playing it quite a bit recently :D Last week I purchased Resident Evil 4 and it's worked just fine for me. However, tonight I wanted to play Grand Turismo 4. Now, I played it just a few days ago, but for some reason, it wouldn't load it(Disk Read Error). I cleaned the disk, blew in the drive a bit, etc etc, but nothing would work. I'd throw Resident Evil back in, and it'd work!

Grand Turismo is new...I've had it for a long time, but I've never used it until I got this PS2(stupid story, ask if you want to know :P)

Any clues? I don't know much about PS2s... I'm assuming it's a problem with my drive, perhaps some disks are read slightly differently and mine's not picking it up for some reason?
 
Since this is a hand-me-down PS2, I'm assuming that's it's not a slim one, right? If this is true, then it probably is your drive. Most of the time, that is what goes wrong with these units, my own included. I've heard many stories from friends of certain games just not loading on these systems. The only possible solution that I know of is to look on eBay for a PS2 with a bad PSU and then use the drive in that one to replace yours. Hope this works out better than mine (broke about 3 months ago, and can't afford to replace it... :().
 
Yeah, it's the chubby one. Well, as long as it plays RE4 I really can't complain I suppose. Maybe once I beat that game and get tired of it, I'll look into replacing the drive. What gets me is RE4 runs just fine. You'd think if something was wrong with the drive, no disks would work.

Another problem, but this is minor as I have a DVD-Recorder, but it won't play any DVD-R's with videos on them. I've recorded a few TV shows using my recorder or my capture card, and neither will play in it. I know one I copied and gave to my bro, and it works in his PS2(apparently no audio, but it plays)

Oh well, maybe I'll rip it open tommarow...
 
for kicks and giggles, open up the ps2 and blow all the dust out you possibly can, same problems happened to mine as far as not reading disks (first it was music cd's, then ps1 games, then the cd ps2 games (blue underside), and finally the dvd ps2 games (clear underside). Blew out all the dust and worked correctly again
 
open it up then open the dvd drive up, there is a variable resistor you have to turn a few notches, it changes how far away the laser will read, google some thing like "ps2 laser adjustment , or ps2 disk read error, email me if you need in depth help (i ve done this before) [email protected]
 
I'll have to see what disk my bro's PS2 would read... No biggie, I just have lots of DVD's I've recorded. But that would make sense as I typically use DVD-R. However, above I was just refering to recorded DVD's in general :P

Hmm...that adjustment thingy sounds like an interesting fix... I opened it up last night and poked around a little bit but nothing changed(still only plays Resident Evil 4) I found a review a few weeks ago about basically ripping the whole laser assembly apart and cleaning the mirror and what not. Maybe once I finish RE4, I'll take the whole thing apart and try that, along with cleaning the case very well. There's still some dust in there that probably caused the problem.
 
Hey guys, thanks for the advice! Mine stopped recognizing there were any discs in the drive suddenly about a month and a half ago, I'll try those things mentioned above!
 
I cleaned out the case and the lens again, and it started working. I messed with the knob a little bit but it didn't help. However, I still can't read one of my DVD's I made, nor could I read a CDRW I listen to in my jeep... Hmm... I wonder if a commercial audio disk would work...
