Ps3 pricing

yeah, i saw a similar article last week, i wonder how much sony are willing to undercut the cost for production.

knowing sony they will get complacent and sell the ps3 at a much higher price than its competition

its gonna be so expensive its weird to see it come out at that price. its funny how in the chart the drive in the PS3 is up to 300 when the 360 is 20, because of the Blu-ray but i dont think its gonna be that great.

I'm not worrying about the console. I'm worrying about the games that will cost. Probably around 90 bucks. Oh yea. Do you know if ps2 games will play on the ps3? I heard it from someone on this forum. If it is I'll be able to wait to get the ps3 instead of the ps2.

Yes, it should have back-wards compatability....however, I heard it will work like the xbox 360. To play xbox games on 360 you need to dowload a plugin for each game.

everyone knows that sony will have to lose money on the ps3 at first in order to make money in the end. i seriously dont think it will be as expensive as the production cost... i mean it's no secret that hardly anyone will pay 700+ for a game console. r&d is there for this reason

That price is outragious playstation is going to lose a lot of potential customers, honestly how many people will dish over that kind of money for a gaming system, even though there will be some idiots that do, the majority of us wont. I say screw ps3. The x box 360 and pc is where it's at:D

there seems to be a slight misconception here, sony isn't going to sell the ps3 at a loss, number one it is stupid cause they will never run microsoft out of the market with it. Number two, it is illegal according to the trade laws in the US, you have to sell something at or above what it cost you to make it, I guess it might be difficult to prove, but my point stands

i seriously doubt that playstation will release the ps3 at 900 big ones regarding whatever the trade laws say. I'm not buisness major and even i know that is shananagens.

Xbox 360 is currently loosing money on every console sold. They make all their money by selling software (aka games) and if PS3's games are going to be $90bucks they will make alot of profit.

i think you miss read the article. The 900 is the cost to produce the box, they will sell them much cheaper (prob around $299 to $399) and are quite willing to make a loss on the box itself...why...because they make shed loads of profit from the games! No thats good business :)

if that's true, microsoft would be in for a serious lawsuit from the US government

yes it is assuming microsoft is selling below their cost of production, they are hindering competition by taking a loss. In effect, they are taking a hit now in hopes that all their competitors take a bigger one and drop out of the market, at which point microsoft would be the only manufacturer and prices would increase significantly. Neither microsoft nor sony can push each other out of the market at this time as I see it, so to do this would be disastrous for either company, but if they were, and if they are selling below their cost of production, it is illegal and a poor business situation in this circumstance

I think ps3 is worth the price because they admit there are a lot of bugs but they are trying to fix it not cover it up like xbox 360. First I heard in pcmag that the xbox 360 can't even play normal xbox games unless you download something (I could copy the article word for word if anyone wants me to) and then I heard a lot of them freeze all the time But for the 2% of americans (and canadians and whoever else) who actually have high-definition TVs it has games in high def thats pretty much the only good thing I heard about xbox 360.

Microsoft sold the original xbox for less then the production cost. Selling the xbox360 bleow production cost was a smart idea. And i dont see how it is illegal if you said they can only do it if in direct competition from another company, which they are, they're competing with Sony and the PS2 (which is still outselling the 360 in Japan....i think). Infact, console companies have been doing this for a while, because, as said, they make back their money from selling the game and peripherals

Of course its not illegal, it a valid business stratergy; with the aim of making revenues on software sales. Its an oligopoly market, and has been since the launch of the very first games consoles. No anticompetition case has come forward because its a valid business model in which you are not just selling the console but you are selling it with the NPV (net present value) of the right to supply games to it at a higher margin.
