PSU blowing circuit?! HELP!

Hey everyone! I'm working on my first home build and I'm having a major issue... here are my system specs-

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 Mobo
Intel i7-980x Processor
GeForce GTX-470 GPU
12GB Kingston DDR3 SDRAM
Rosewill RX950-S-B 950W PSU

After everything was assembled the system boot up fine the first time. I shut it down and tried the power switch again and a split second after the power came on the outlet blew and the system shut down. I stupidly tried it again on a self-resetting outlet and the system booted fine and I was able to enter the BIOS, start installing Windows 7, etc. It blew the breaker again on another boot and I decided not to play with it anymore. I called Rosewill tech support and they told me that perhaps my GPU needed a PSU with a higher 12V amperage in order to run it. I'm far from being an expert, but that sounds like a load of BS to me. The card requires a 650W minimum PSU and this one is rated at 950W.

Does this sound like a PSU issue and does the fact that I was able to access the system BIOS and start installing an OS mean that my MOBO/Processor are still intact?

Really appreciate the reply.

I've been slowly discovering that Rosewill isn't the best out there...

I don't know if you can answer this, but I already RMA'd the PSU to newegg for a replacement. Do you know if they'll allow me to change that to a REFUND so I can get something a little more reliable?

may i suggest using an outlet that ISNT a GFI and an outlet that doesnt have alot of other appliances plugged in and on a different circuit try that before ya send the sucka back

Hi linksys!

I tried it on 4 different outlets, and only one of them was a GFI. Also, I tried it on one outlet where I was sure there was very little on the same circuit. Same results each time.

I think I may try to get a refund and go with the one jeremy recommended. Seems like that thing should have juice to power everything.

Any idea on the status of my other hardware items? Is there a way to test for damage or is everything ok if I'm able to access BIOS and install the OS?

try this

it sounds stupid but try using an outlet in the kitchen most circuits in the home living room bedroom etc are 15amp circuits the 2 bedroom apt. im living at is wired all wrong both bedrooms the living room and some of the dining room are all on one in the winter with a heater in the bedroom just firing up the 360 will flip the breaker. most kitchen circuits however are 20 amp try it there and maybe try a friends house if that doesnt work and if still nothing than the POS needs to go back!

Tried that and the issue persisted. I'm going to send that thing back. I've heard good things about THIS unit. Any thoughts? Should it be enough power?

That seems like a good one but why do you like that one over what jeremy442 posted? Either will do just fine for your build.

It was recommended by someone else for compatibility with the i7 980x. What's the difference between the TX and the HX?

just because you tried different outlets doesn't mean that a)you got away from the gfi because gfi plugs can protect more than one outlet in a room b) you can still be on the same breaker in the breaker box. if you stayed in the same room, more than likely you have done one of these things. you may want to try a different room. or you could take the computer to a friends house and make sure that it isn't a faulty breaker. if you trip a breaker or something at his/her house then you definatly have a problem.

BTW i highly recommend the OCZ power supplies.

Someone on another forum recommended I take it to a different house and give it a shot so I did and the problem persisted. I'm sending the PSU back.

The Corsair 750HX and 750TX have both been recommended for me as replacements. I'm not exactly sure of the difference between the two except for the price and some different cable configurations. Can anyone shed any light on this and will either of those be able to power all of the above components plus five 3.5" Internal drives? I believe Newegg's calculator told me something like 760W for my system. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and get something that has a little head room...

Also, how would I be able to tell if my mobo/processor was damaged by the power supply? Would I be able to access the BIOS and install and OS if either of them were damaged?

I'm very grateful for the responses, btw. Thank you all!
