PSU Blown Up

Hello anyone who can help!

I was fitting a second HDD to my emachines 5250 and after connecting the power and data cable to the HDD & motherboard I plugged in the PC.

This is where things went wrong, as soon as the power was switched on at the wall (not at the PC) there was an electric flash from the PC (near to where the SATA data cable is plugged into the motherboard) and a smell of burning. The machine had no power.

I have tried switching the PC on but it is getting no power to it, I have also changed the fuse in the plug but that made no difference.

I took off the rest of the PC case and the PSU smells a little burnt but I don't know if that is the real problem or if I fried the motherboard.

If anyone has any pointers then it would be appreciated, I don't really want to fork out for a new PSU that is not needed.

Thank you in advance.

If you don't have the money, borrow a friends but most likely its your power supply that went bad.

If you know for sure the flash came from the PC then you had a short somewhere. The electric current jumped from one spot to another and in the gap created a spark. You can swap out for another power supply, They are easy to get anywhere just make sure you have enough power for the devices you have. Also if your power supply was pretty dirty it couldve easily caused a short. You could tell if it was your motherboard most likley. If you look over it real close find a brown or black spot. That is where the short occured. If you use a different power supply and it doesnt fix your problem look over your board close. Also make sure your %100 you have everything hooked up right and they belong together. When it comes to electrical you dont want to have any doubt in your mind. If your dont end up frying your brain you will fry your wallet.
