PSU Died? HELP!

While loading Windows, my machine suddenly died. The only thing that appears to be on is the front panel LED that shows that it is getting power, i.e., is plugged in and the switch on the back of the PSU is on. No fans or drives are running.

It seems to me that the PSU must have failed, and that there is no need to do anything further to confirm the diagnosis. Is that correct? Or should I confirm it? If I should, do I need to hook up another PSU to confirm that that corrects the problem, or can I just check the connectors with a voltmeter?

Thanks for any advice.

Did you use the brass standoffs that screw into the case before you attached the motherboard? Sounds like you might have a short in your setup, it could be because no standoffs or you have a bad power supply. Make sure you have a standoff for every hole on the mohterboard that would screw down to the case. If you have those installed already try a different power supply. Make sure all your connections are tight and haven't forgotten a cable like the 4 or 8 pin cpu power cable.

If you have another unit, put that into your system and see if it fires up with that, if it does then you know that it is the PSU that has gone kaput.

If that doesn't work either, then you still don't know if it is the power supply or not (that one could be dodgy too) unless it has come out of a working system. If it is just one you had kicking about, check your suspected one with a voltmeter if you have one and see if it is pulling any power.

If it is then it will probably be your motherboard.

Can you open your CD/DVD drive when the system is "on" ?

yea it sounds like it has gone to me.

What are you full system specs?

If it is a prebuilt, so a dell or hp or acer or something, say the manufacturer and model, we can find it out from there, unless ofcourse you know the full specs, then fire away :P
