PSU died`

Not 30 minutes ago did my PSU die. Fizzing, popping, the norm I'd guess. I took off the side cover, and in the heat of the moment didn't pull AC. I heard some fizzing coming from the DVD-rom, so I pulled the power dongles, disconnected the 20+4pin motherboard connector, and unplugged the power. I figure the "soft power" was sucking current through a jacked voltage regulator... I know A PSU that dies hard can damage other components, And I've never experienced a PSU death at all, So I've no hands on experience.. Does it sound likely that other components have been damaged? I could care less for the DVD drive but if my primary HDD, CPU, RAM or video card have been fuskered I'm going to be one sad camper.

I don't have an extra PSU laying around so I'll have to wait till payday and order one up from Newegg or something. It would just be a big let-down to get the P/S and find out the rest of my PC is gone belly up..... I'd appreciate any and all input.

Thanks

I remember thinking, "oh shit pull out the power!" And then proceeded to do so. I believe i pulled out the power dongles first, then AC, then motherboard connectors. Odd way of doing things i know, but I had to be quick man, no time for thinking! lol, but I'm in a good mood, I went hunting around our apartment for a old PSU, and found a 200w, 10a +12v rail PSU and managed to boot into my primary OS! I'm so lucky it ain't even funny.

*Jigs*

But just to expand my current knowledge on power related computer crap, would it be bad to yank the connectors while the power is still running through the thing? What would exactly happen, should you know? Doesn't sound like any surges would be eminent should it occur.

You could short something, that's why you shouldn't do it. I also did it a couple of times (the power molexes) and it shut down my PSU with a big spark. After a couple of minutes it was working again.

I see, I'll remember that. Thanks! This my second "near-miss", my first being what I thought was a bad BIOS flash. As such I'm feeling like a hundred bucks, ain't nothing can bring me down! :D

This just means I have an excuse to buy a big PSU, with like 40 amps on the +12v. THen I could afford to power a GTS or something, and still have headroom for any other upgrades.

That's weird, it seems this 8 year year old 250w, 10a +12v PSU can handle my 7600gt in oblivion at my regular maxed settings. It plays the with the same FPS, but with a considerable heat jump, 10*c or so. The current is half of what's recommended, I'm surprised it plays the same, I expected a hefty FPS drop or something....

I'm getting the ultra xfinity 500w 32a +12v PSU though, I'm uncomfortable with this old hunk of junk.

Are you sure here aren't damaged components? cuz last time my power supply fried, it damaged video card and cpu but not that much to the point of being unusable but rather to points where it would peak, increase heat etc

Yeah I was thinking exactly that. Covert damage will often occur in these situations, where problems will be off and on, or the components will show their true damage over time. Regardless i dunno of any ways to diagnose these types of Intermittent problems. :\

I think i'm going to just have to wait it out, and see what comes to be. It's morose, but I don't think I have any other options T.T
