psu exploded

I would say its not good at all. The corsair line is great, though. You could use a 550w in your system and have plenty of leftover power.

would there still be room for improvement with a 550, when I was building it I asked a friend who is pretty knowledgeable and told me I will need 500 or more

thanks, I will also be upgrading to 16gb ram at some point as well, will this psu still be ok, just gonna go look round for a good price on that psu now
 
It will be fine with 650. Do you plan on ever crossfiring or sli'ing. As then you probably will need more than 650.

EDIT: Out of curiosity why 16gb? in the Constant hate for amd thread i got the assumption that your system was primarily for gaming. 8GB is more than enough for that. Unless you can score a nice deal on 16gb not really much use in gaming.

I can 16gb ram for £90, I was thinking really it would be better to get a good deal on that rather than getting another 2 x 4gb and then them becoming useless when I want to upgrade, I do like to be able to multitask, when I had my previous computer it had an athlon dualcore 4600 processor and 2gb ram, I was playing civ 4 on a LAN game with 2 friends and I decided I wanted some music on. I put I tunes on as this is where my music is and the game became unplayable, one game and i tunes was all it took to mess it up. I also have my current computer as a media center, it's connected to the living room t.v and though the surround system so anything I watch will come through there and obviously I have my whole music collection which I can play through it as well, although unfortunately I have had to connect it through the auxillary as it doesn't have optical input.

oh also sorry, wasn't sure what that was but had an idea so looked it up to comfirm it. Probably won't do, would be too expensive

8gb should do fine for this. Im not too sure when they reckon games will actually use 16GB :P We've been at 4gb for a while and its not even the minimum in most games. the way i see it is 16gb for 90 o.O or 8gb for 50 with an extra 40 for a better gpu.

obviously im not saying you must not buy 16gb, its entirely your choice :P But if it were me id go for 8gb.

possibly, I suppose I am a bit skint and there are three aspects that really need upgrading, psu, graphics card and ram. I always neglect the graphics card a bit mainly because I know how expensive good ones can be, I wanted to make sure however that it had HDMI though as I wanted a high quality picture for games and wathing films, also was thinking of bluray but if I wanted full surround I would need a new surround system
 
You dont need hdmi for high quality picture. Iirc its the same as dvi however hdmi allows audio to be used through the same connection where as dvi does not. I dont think iv ever come across a card that physically cant do 1080. (obviously some cant play games at that :P)

That said im sure 6850's have dropped to 100 quid. They are really good cards for the price. I love mine. Rubbish thing is a few month after i got mine 6870's dropped real hard in price. I wanted to QQ.

that's quite interesting, I should really research more before buying, a source I just found also comfimed this http://hdmivsdvi.com/ I have three hdmi slots on my tv, one is taken by the pc, one by the 360 and annoyingly I have to keep swapping between the surround system and the sky hd, I don't need the ability for it to transmit sound as it's through the surround system anyway

yeah, I heard that before, there is a huge problem with me for that, I would lose the surround system so the music and films would sound poor, I would also have to use wireless to connect the pc to the internet as my girlfriend goes nuts about all the wires so trailing a big ethernet cable out of the room is not an option, she is already eying up my speaker wires wanting rid of them, also there is only really the landing with just enough room to fit a computer table, although it is really temping mainly because I think it would be a better pc gaming position than the sofa, plus I would be able to use if when people have commandeered the t.v
 
Thats a fair enough reason :P Haha, just though id mention it as i used to think Tv's produced better pictures than monitors :P (obviously after a bit of research i felt quite the idiot :P)

First, of course, unplug everything and wait till it cools down. I would try testing each part individually, like trying the RAM/hard drive/optical drive/graphics card (if it has one) in a different computer. If they work, you may be fine.

If there's no physical damage to the motherboard or anything else, try it with a different PSU. But first post here the specs and make/model of the different PSU you are planning on trying, if you go that way.

today I completely stripped the dodgy computer down and cleaned every last bit of dust out of fans, components and case while checking for damage as I assembled it again, I noticed that the cpu had been forced in rather than the release arm being lifted and carefully placed in as there were a couple of bent pins on the cpu, I straightened out the pins as best I could and placed the cpu in the socket, I also noticed the thermal paste was practically gone, never the less I have now assembled the computer properly and am still waiting on a psu when I get paid I will probably get this, do you think the cpu will be knackered due to the forced installment

I just connected the pc through dvi through the tv instead of hdmi and the picture was horrible, it looked blurry, it looked sp much sharper with the hdmi, is that due to the resolution settings?
 
I would check the DVI cable and the resolution settings. The DVI is the same picture as HDMI, just HDMI has sound. They should look the same at the same settings.
