Hi i recently bought a custom built pc from a local shop ive had the computer for 2 weeks and im now on my 4th power supply and i still have the same problem, it does it when i play any top end games eg crysis the psu gets to hot and then trips the power i originally had a 500w psu then had a 450w then a 600w and now ive got another 600w but this one seems abit more decent but still cuts out when i play games does anyone know what could be causing the problem and could it be software related??

My system specs:
Sparkle nvidia geforce gtx 460
4gb ddr3 ram
amd phenom ii x4
500gb hdd

all i know is that there is a 600w silentpro in at the mo which i know isnt a make i have heard of do you think that the psu is the problem??

the psu cuts out when i play games like crysis if any one has any further input or suggestions please leave any info that may prove useful it would be greatly appreciated :)

If the power supplies you are using are no name brands, Then they probably don't have enough power to run you video card. Get a brand name like corsair, xclio, thermaltake, antec. Find out how many amps is required to run that vid card and go from there.

i would probably guess the reason the 450 and 500 watt psus crapped out would be because of poor quality/running at max rated amperage. but i don't really see how you should be getting psu issues with the 600w silentpro. it can go up to 40 amps on the 12V rail and the gtx 460 pulls about 13 and the phenom ii another (with overclocking) 14 or so.

what kind of airflow do you have in your case?

what kind of temps do you get with your cpu and gpu?

In post 3 you said Silent Pro 600W. The only one I know of is Cooler Master that has that model. Not a great one, but should power it fine.

If your system is shutting down with that one, and has blew a few (cheap) other ones. I would say you have a problem somewhere. Either by using a couple cheap supplies that blew and did something to it, or something has been wrong since the beginning.

does anyone know of a good decent power supply that would be enough to run my system please could you suggest a make and model i have approx £60-£70 to spend on one, thanks in advance, carl :)

Are you sure that the problem is the PSU? What exactly happens when you play those games - does the computer restart or switch off completely? If it restarts, then perhaps your graphics card or memory is at fault. Try a free program called Memtest86+ to check memory.

The PSU turning off is not necessarily a PSU problem. Any number of malfunctioning components can cause a computer to spontaneously turn off. Since you've been through four power supplies, I would say that is likely not the problem. Since it happens during gaming, I would say that it is either the CPU/GPU overheating, or possibly the GPU or RAM malfunctioning.

You can start off by checking your CPU and GPU temperature. Try using coretemp and PCwizard and post your temps. You can also run Prime95 for a bit and see if it's your CPU that's cutting out.

It may be the motherboard failing intermittently by not returning a 'good' signal to the psu, ie that would shut it down. But i would also investigate heat issues.
