PSU Power Problems...

Hi, I've recently built my own PC.

All went well until the other week when it randomly shut down with no warning (as if the power had been switched off at the mains)

I was able to boot it back up but then 5 minutes later for example it would do it again, then only 2 mins running and again...

Then It wouldn't work at all until I unplugged the power cable from the PSU.

Sometimes the PC would run for hours but I'd have to leave the PSU unplugged over night or for a long period before.

So I assumed it must off been the PSU, I only had a 450W one so I thought I didn't have enough power. So I upgraded to a 850W PSU. But this has all been fitted, I have the 4+4 Pin connecter in the new one but my MB is just a 4pin. so I connected half...

After fitting the new PSU I have no power at all, the fan doesn't even move there is no sign of life at all.

The PSU I bought was brand new out the box, it was a Artic Blue 850W.

So I am not sure what to do?

All help appropriated... Thanks

I suspect the original bad PSU you had damaged the motherboard. You should only buy PSUs from reputable brands too: Corsair, XFX, OCZ, Seasonic etc etc.

So yeah, I'm going to guess your motherboard may be damaged.

Thanks, I just don't understand how the computer worked with the less powerful psu, I guess I'll have to upgrade everything anyway just to be sure.

Test your current PSU in another PC and see if the same thing happens, just to verify it's not the new PSU.
