PSU Problems

Last night my computer on standby and it just made this nasty noise, flash of light and shutdown. I unplugged everything and discovered it was the PSU.

I am using a Rosewill 500W with my X800XL which needs at least 350W.

I had a leftover Dell 305W that I am using right now, will it be sufficent or should I buy a new one?

Wattage doesn't matter nearly as much as amps. I'm feel pretty sure your Dell PSU would be fine but might be too weak for gamming.

Oh, and just for an example, my previous gamming machine had a PSU that showed the wattage on a little meeter. I never saw it above 250, and that was with a Raptor RAID and a 6800GT :P

Ok, thanks. I am probably going to use it just to hold me off until I upgrade. I am eventually going to upgrade my case, mobo, and HSF.

I myself am one that doesn't like spending money unless I have to. I'm cheap. That's what happens when you can't even afford a down payment on a free lunch. :P

I would continue using it personally, and wait to see if it will satisfactorily power your gear. The only thing I would be concerned of is too much of a load popping the PSU sending a surge through your computer or something. I'm not saying that's going to happen, of course, just that you might want to keep your eyes open for telltale signs.

Yea I will definitley keep an eye on it. But my 500W one breaking actually helped me.

With my old 500W PSU there was this weird clicking noise that was quite loud and I didnt really know what it was. I got used to it. I turned on my computer a few minutes ago with the old Dell PSU and it was silent, now I know it was the PSU making noise.

I never knew how quiet my pc was.
