PSU smell

I have a BFG 550w PSU and ever since I installed another hd4670 in crossfire I have been having a electrical smell. It sticks up my room and it is very noticable. I though that maybe it was the video card itself but now I beleive it is coming from the PSU.
This is the first time I have had this problem curious if my psu is being overpowerd than I guess cause it to smell ??? THanks Jason.

I am running 6 120mm fans, (2) harddrives and (2) cd/dvd burners

Can you describe this electrical smell? Is it like a new electronic smell, or is it a burning electronic smell?

It smells as though something is being overpowered or hot. I have another 4670 and it never made this smell. I have all my fans pushing into the case and my psu is my vent so that is where the smell is the strongest.

Sounds to me like you are trying to draw too much power from a 550W power supply, each 4670 draws around 100W on the +12v rails, plus then however much the rest of the system is drawing.

I have been looking at a 4670 myself and crossfire at later date. These cards have a max boarder power of 60w but sounds like you have loads of fans and accesories? Could you disconnect all the stuff u dont need or even try the graphics cards one at a time and see if smell goes?

Each card uses around 100W, so you have around 200W for the rest of the system. The CPU Uses around another 80W and that is before overclocking. It may be time for a power supply upgrade...Although i do have to ask, did you remember to plug in the board supplementary power? That asrock board needs a 4pin molex if you want to run crossfire.

burning electronic smell is never a good thing, yes things can smell before they go bad, I'd get a new power supply before it took out my whole system...

Yes all plug in options on this board are plugged in. Crossfire is not working even though it states it is enabled. I removed the other card and the smell went away. I am thinking of just buying a 4870 does this use more power than two 4670's.

Sounds like your power supply is overloaded. Two 4670's in crossfire use less power than a 4870, so you may want to upgrade that power supply.

I hear that corsair makes good PSU's any other brands I should consider. If I upgrade the PSU than I want it to be the last time for atleast 5 years. Thanks

Depends what you want to pay:

650W will cover any single card and lower dual cards like 4670's:

This 750W will cover almost anything, ive seen three GTX285's under full load in tri sli run off this unit(although i personally wouldnt run more than two cards off a 750W), and is a bit higher quality than corsair units, it has seasonic internals over channelwell:

Or a red one that is cheaper, but identical to the black 750W:

I am thinking about getting a 1080p monitor, maybe another hard drive, crossfire two 4870's, and add a bluray player sometime within a year.

System : Motherboard: Asrock A780GXE/128
Memory : 4Gig Gskill DDR 1066
Dvd/CD : (2) Cd/Dvd burners
Gpu : HIS HD4670
Harddrives: (2) 500Gig WD Black Sata
Cpu : Phenom X2 @ 3.9
Heatsink : Dark Knight Xigmatek
Psu : BFG 550w
Fans: (6) 120mm Fans
Case: Ultra Gladiator

Go for either of the pc power and cooling 750W units then;) The red one is cheaper, same internals/specs, so if you dont mind the color its $10 or so cheaper.

Only problem I have with this PSU is it does not have the 120mm fan at the bottom to vent my case. My Xigmatek cooler only mounts up or down.

Is the time right on this forum 6:40pm here
