PSU/Video card help

Hey, I'm looking into buying a new video card, and I have my eyes set on a XFX HD-687A-ZHFC Radeon HD 6870

Problem is, I'm running the stock 450watt diablotek PSU that came with my case, and its recommended that I use a 500+ watt PSU.

Do you think I should be changing the PSU to a higher one? or will I be fine using the one I have now?

All my parts are only about a month old, so pretty much new

you would def want a new psu, diablotek psus are garbage, if not replace, they are likely to blow and take other parts with them. look at the corsair cx600, since they're 15% off right now, you might as well get a little extra power for some good overhead for the future.

I agree, you should look to get a beefier, as well as better brand of psu. That Corsair CX600 would work very well.

On another note, while Diablotek make low-quality psu's, you make it sound all but guaranteed that if he continues to use it, it WILL blow and take other parts with it. That's a possibility, but I would hardly consider it "likely." That's just cliche internet forum crap that has been gradually evolving over the years. Five years ago a crap psu "could blow and if you're really unlucky it might even take out a component or two along with it."

Just saying. :)

Actually it is very likely(after reading many reviews)that the power supply will blow and take out many parts and even a house or two. Reviews from buyers on newegg:

The fan is cheap and has begun to fail after 6 months.

PSU failed within a year. All emails sent to the email address provided on the manufacturers website for warranty support have gone unanswered.

Purchased this on 10/7/2011. Got it home and had an IT professional install the PS. The computer would not power up at all. We gained access to a tester and found the Voltage to be low (11.6) I have attempted to contact "Diablotek" by phone and email and can not get ANY response from them. This thing is a paper weight and I am out my money.

Seems to be the cause of alot of intermittent problems. I built 21 machines for a classroom, and so far I've had several fried ASUS motherboards, several failed Seagate hard drives, the LG DVD drives don't work consistently, especially when burning DVD's, it can't maintain speeds above 1x and will often coaster.
The failed HDD's had noticeable brown burn marks on the circuitry, and the mobos had strange power related issues. They often would turn on with the error "Overclocking failed" when they were not set to overclock, which ASUS posts as being a PSU issue.

I ordered two of these, and one worked great, until, while my computer was off, but plugged in, one of the giant capacitors inside it blew up. Like... Blew Up. there was rancid smoke, and it splattered the entire system with the Capacitor Goo. Gross. Fortunately, Diablotek replaced it for me quite quickly. I have had no problems with new ones.
The other one was partially DOA. It worked, but after two months quit entirely. (fortunately, not so explosively). All it would do was make a very high pitched ringing sound whenever it was plugged in. I am sending that one back now.

The fact that the PSU is a pile of crap is undeniable. But I still wouldn't consider the possibility of it blowing and taking other components with it as "likely." To me likely means considerably higher than a 50% chance. Something around an 80%+ chance would fit the bill, and that clearly isn't the case. While evidence for or against can't be sufficiently determined from a few Newegg reviews, the math certainly doesn't come even close to adding up in favor of the unit blowing and taking other components with it at least 80% of the time.

When I discuss stuff, I mean what I say and if I go to the trouble of getting into specifics, the specifics are very relevant to my opinion. There's a world of difference between generalizing and specifics in a case like this.

Thanks everyone for the replies,

As the Video card is probably the most power intense component I'll be using,
Would 530W be enough?

Looking at this Raidmax, it has pretty good reviews
RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-530SS 530W ATX12V

I really like the cable management in this PSU, and not really looking to spend too much, as this is a budget build

Raidmax are junk as well. You can't skimp out on a psu, you'll regret it later. Again, I recommend the Corsair tx650 v2 or even this Silverstone model which is a little cheaper.

I understand that concept, but for PSU, I think $50 is my absolute limit for one
I've already upped my video card limit from ~$110 to $160

Thanks everyone for your input,
I've made my decision to buy a Raidmax 630W, and do not regret it

Powers my 6870 like a charm, as with everything else

Don't really care much about the LED, only con is that it's not fully modular as I'd hope
