Purchased a new desktop, need thoughts/advice

You haven't already bought it have you? I sure hope not.

No mention of motherboard brand/model. No mention of RAM brand/model. PSU is listed as "400 watt" which means peak usage. Probably has zero protections or safeties. One power surge will fry it. Mediocre video card as well.

It's not so much outdated as it is overpriced.

What's better? Motherboard. High quality board, high quality VRM's (very important) and a reputable brand. PSU. Made from one of if not the best PSU companies. More than enough connections and headroom for more devices. RAM. Quality, lifetime warranty, reputable brand.

Without knowing this information, assume the worst. Assume they are using absolute bottom of the barrel parts to save money.

CPU/GPU/RAM aren't the most important components. The most important thing is to have a high quality Motherboard and Power Supply. A bad either means imminent failure or failure to run as desired, or rated.
I'd much rather spend $80 more (minus rebates) and build it myself, and have quality components, than save $80 and buy something with no-name components in it.
