i was helping someone set up a wireless network in their house when i had a problem

their existing setup was this: (they have broadband internet service)

cable outlet in wall connected to "shark" (provided by the internet service provider) which is connected via ethernet cable to their desktop pc

heres what i did:

unplug ethernet cable from desktop computer, plug it into new wireless router (d-link brand)
plug in desktop computer to wireless router (the wireless router is for a new computer)
so now the signal goes from the wall, to the "shark", to the wireless router, to the desktop pc

their internet was working perfectly before i made the change
after the change it didn't work, even after running through the setup cd included with the new wireless router

we then decided to go back to old set up, so we removed the wireless router and plugged the desktop computer directly into the "shark". after all this the internet still didnt work, even though it was set up exactly the same as before

any suggestions?

There must be some problem in the router you are usin, try to set up the connection by some other router like buffalo ...

Same Problem

When i bought my wireless router (D-Link D514) i had the same problem. I had to call D-Link and then Earthlink and get them to walk me through doing what they called "Bridging" the modem (netopia DSL) with the router. Funny thing is when i did the next clean system restore which i do once a year, Windows xp configured everything itself and i didnt have to call anybody. You might want to try that. D-Link is 1-800-326-1688

yeah i agree i've read similar situations before....

once you bridge it, it will work all the time regardless of if you re-install XP as it only relates to the router and modem themselves.
