Putting a computer to sleep, and also, locking it

When you put a vista computer to sleep, does it allow processes that were running (such as a norton virus scan) to keep running? Or does it pause them?
Also, the same with the lock button, does it let programs run? or does it pause them?

When you put a computer to sleep is a power-saving state. Sleep saves all open documents and programs, and allows the computer to quickly resume full-power operation (typically within several seconds) when you want to start working again. Putting your computer to sleep is like pausing a DVD player: the computer immediately stops what it’s doing and is ready to start again when you want to resume working.

yes, i have googled it before and have found that as well. but i was looking for more of a specific answer, because when i resume windows, it seems like things have been running, but id like to know for sure. and same with lock mode please.
thank you

Why would you want to put it to sleep and leave processes running? Defeats the point..

Just turn off you monitor so it appears its sleeping and you can be happy
