Putting a server onto the Internet

Is it possible to put a server of my own onto the Internet, just by having it connected to a wireless network?

I don't want a domain name, just an IP address.

I'm looking to be able to take my server to school and work on things there (for which I need it to be able to be on the Internet), and then take it home. Can I just pick up the school's wireless Internet, and put the server straight online? Or do I need help from the school IT admin?


Sorry if this sounds n00bish - as you can see, I'm a new user - but if someone could tell me whether this is possible, and if so, how to do it, that'd be great.

Im a bit confused by the question, you want to take your server to school with you? or do you want to be able to access your home server from school? if so then yes you can do this, it just involves some port forwarding on your router to allow you access to the services you require on the server.

Please specify in a bit more detail what exactly it is you want to do so I can help you out more.
 
I want to take my server to school, let it pick up the wireless network there, and be accessable via the Internet.

Ok ermm yes you could do that, im not entirely sure why you would want to, but im sure you have a good reason. so the answer to your question is yes.. providing your server has a wireless card.

When you say accesible via the internet are you going to want to let people connect to it? because your schools security policies (firewall etc) may prevent that.
 
Thanks Homenet. Yeah, I do want to let people connect to it, preferably via the Internet rather than network.
 
I will warn you coming from a previous job working in IT at a school if we saw a server on the network we would warn you one time. Yes we can tell if its a server as we would do sweeps and the program told us the os it was. 2nd time you were banned from internet and computer access for 30 days 3rd time all year 4th time perminately and also could be expelled. Be very careful and ensure you talk to your it staff at school first...
 
I'm still a bit confused. You can setup a server at home and access the contents of that server from anywhere on the web via simple FTP. I don't know why you would carry a physical server around with you, unless it's a laptop or something, but why do you need it at school when you can access the contents of the server while it remains at your home?

I highly doubt the school would permit you to setup your own server on their network, besides you would need access to their routers in order for people to connect to it outside the network.
