Putting Computer to Sleep

I heard that putting a computer to sleep a lot could damage the hard drive over time. Just wondering if there was any truth to that

yeah i heard that too, well not the computer really but the hard drives, they cranked up when you wake your pc up, and the performance reduces drastically

Frequent spinning the drive up and down could possibly cause problems in the end... However, there shouldn't be any difference between shutting it down or putting it to sleep when you're not going to use it for a while. My laptop is basically always asleep/in suspend. I try not to turn it off and on a lot...and so far so good.

There is a big problem with laptops and people putting them to sleep (hibernation), then packing them up in a NB case, slinging it over their shoulder and going out somewhere.

When systems are in hibernation the hard drive does not park! So you can imagine the movement while you are walking. It can be quite damaging to the platters.

Probably 50% of the notebooks that show up at the Service counter at work are transported in this state. Always shut your laptop system down before you move it around.
