so for some reason theres somefile that is corrupted on my comp and it wont let me boot up, it just says replace this file with recovery disc, and i tryed lookin in my hdd from my brothers computer but it says files are corrupted and it cant look, so if i boot from windows xp disc and redo windows, is all my memory deleted? and if so anyone know of anyway to get into my hdd to transfer stuff befor i wipe it and reinstall

ok so heres my problem, i get a windows.system32\hal.dll is corrupt and cant start windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184/en-us, thats how to fix it, but for some reason my hdd is partitioned, and i dont use drive C cause that is partitioned to 2GB so theres a fresh copy of windows on there ive never used, what i do operate from is drive D and thats where the corrupted file is, and when i startup from disc and follow those directions, the only repairing i can do is to drive C, drive D wont even come up as an option to fix anything with the bootcfg/rebuild command...any suggestions?

put in an XP installation CD, select "repair installation using recovery console" and it will boot into a command prompt for you. run the command

chkdsk /r

on your disk. it will default to C so you need to run it on your OS partition. how to do that i'm not quite sure as i dont use command prompt very much in windows.

yayaya, i went through everything on the microsoft website, and basically replaced files on my C drives version of windows that didnt need to be fixed, its the D drives version of windows that is corrupted and i need to know how to go through that process thats on the microsoft website, but for my D drive

If you have two OS installed you can choose in Recovery console which one you want to access. On the beginning.

If you want to save your files download live linux (Freespire, Knoppix or ubuntu).
You daont have to install it. Itwill run from CD.

when i go to recovery, it asks which windows set up would you like to go to....and it says 1. C:\WINDOWS
and thats the only option i get, i have no ****ing clue why its not giving me an option 2 for D:\WINDOWS...computer stuff pisses me off so much

Did you try to use these commands from your link in Recovery console?

So at the moment you should be able boot to your Windows on C: if only the one on D: is ******.

yes but drive D is where all my stuff is i need to save, C is basically a copy of windows on it, and thats it...i dont even use it...if i were to reinstall windows on D and say recover windows or whatever, instead of the option to install a fresh copy of windows, does that just put a fresh copy of windows and keeps all my saved files?

ok so when i tried the process of that link up there, it asks me where i want to go, and gives 1 option for C:windows, but no D:windows...then if i try to reinstall it askes what windows i want to reinstall on and gives options again, but again only thing that comes up is C:windows....no D drive so for some reason i think all this stuff isnt recognizing the partitioned D drive that has the corrupted file, any suggestions?
