If money is not an option which would you choose.

If I would use it for playing games and burning movies. and i like to have programs like vent open, and gpuz and other performance monitors open while playing games sometimes, and also sometimes burn a movie while playing a game.

Which processor have better performance?

Probably the E8400. I don't think the Q6600 would be faster in any realistic circumstances.

Don't upgrade from the Phenom though. You will not see a very marginal difference if any and it would not be worth it.

well

i say whatever futureproof wins but this is my view q6600 is my vote and i hear its very overclockable which is good so that gets my vote i just hope it gets cheaper then what it is soon cuz i want to put it in my next rig

The E8400 is by far the choice for gaming. The Q6600 will not be the "gaming" chip, but more of a multitasking / workstation cpu.

There are hardly any games that utilize quads, so two faster cores on the E8400 would be faster than four slower cores on the quad in gaming.

well see thats what im saying. like running a few things in the background while playing my game it will still be faster to have a e8400 right.

Yea see thats what im saying, i will only be playing games with a few things open for the game,

like Ventrilo and GPU-z to keep an eye on things. and a webpage like computerforum.com open for easy access, so that means the e8400 will be better for me right?

i dont have photoshop open while playing Crysis, doing a virus scan, and listening to music, which a movie burning at the same time.

the most i will do is play CS:S with a movie burning at the same time.

What kind of "things in the background"?

If you mean doing multiple heavy tasks such as burning a disc, running a virus scan, streaming video or editing movies at a time then you're better of with the Q6600.

If you mean things like downloading music/programs, CPU-z/GPU-z, Ventrilo or just one of the above tasks while you're gaming then the E8400 will do fine.

yea i will be playing a game with vent open and GPUz and sometimes burn a movie.

and i want future proof. so thats the main reason i would consider the q6600 because im going to get the gigabyte P35-DS3L for overclocking purposes

Good choice on the motherboard my friend, I'm getting it too! :)

I think the E8400 is more future proof than the Q6600 and since you're not gonna be truly using all 4 cores with heavy tasks then the E8400 is the way to go this time. ;)

ahaha im scared though. lol. i can get them both at the same price, which bothers me because you can OC the q6600 to the same as the wolfdale if needed. but i understand what your saying.

Well, the Q6600 can overclock to 3.5GHz+ but most of the time only on water cooling. On the other hand, you can reach the 4.0GHz mark on air if you choose the E8400. ;)

haha man your making this too easy. lol. im selling my mobo and cpu to a friend and i wont pay a penny extra for my intel set up, which i am very happy about. its going to be an easy switch. but since i only game and have a few things open at the same time the e8400 is seeming to come out on top.

You're keeping your 8800GTS (G92) right? With the E8400 and 4GB of RAM, your comp is gonna be pretty much The Gaming Rig! ;)

yea, i have some new corsair xms2 mem coming in 2x2GB sticks, but i still havent decided on pc6400 or pc8500 apparently is not worth the extra money.
