Q6700 or Q9300

Hi All.

Im doing a new build soon, now ive got these prices.

Q6700 - $406
Q9300 - $372

Now I know the Q9300 is only 2.5ghz and the Q6700 is 2.66ghz, but the Q9300 is 45n, whilst the Q6700 is 65n.

Which one should I get, im leaning towards the Q9300 but the Q6700 being more expensive im wondering if Im missing something?

Cheers

Well i had a look at them both on newegg for the specs.

I would go for the Q6700, because of the cache and the speed.

Also, I was looking at cpu performance chart and the Q9300 was slightly better, so Ive got another question.

If I wanted to do a slight Overclock not heaps like nothing that requires heaps of cooling, maybe even just overclocking with the stock fan/heatsink. Maybe up to 3ghz or something. Which one is easy/gets more performance?

I was thinking of getting a zalman 9700 too to make this easyer, has fast could I crank them stable with the Zalman?

First of all, those prices seem pretty outrageous, where are you buying from?

For overclocking, the Q6700 should be better. You would probably hit 3.5, maybe even 4 with a Zalman. It has a 10x multiplier which should help.

Are you buying it from a U.S.-based store/website? If you are, those prices are extremely high for the items.

yeah, now that you said that, i agree.

id go Q9300

45nm = less heat = better overclocking.

Now that is the basic comparison you need.

Personally i would go with the Q9300.

Process - I would go with a 45nm process (less heat)

L2 Cache - I would go with 8Mb as im a gamer (but the difference wont be too noticable)

Clock speed - Irrelevant (as you can overclock) but the Q6700 will reach your target clock easier

FSB - Q9300. Its much faster, and with your overclock, it will become even more.

They are tie in this case, but, one of the things the Q6700 wins with (the clock speed) is irrelevant as you gonna OC the system Anyways.

So i say Q9300

Hi all. Good feed back, ahaha and about the prices yes I could see that they would be high if it was US dollars but im in NZ, so they are actually pretty cheap for what they are, I was expecting to spend more around 500 or so for a chip. Yours dollars are roughly double ours.

Ok, so if im gonna go to 3ghz, which chip and do I need the zalman? I dont wanna go much more than that cause whats the point and I dont want to accidentally ruin my chip.

I think Ill go with 9300 unless my research turns up anything more awful. Cause it seems im getting a newer chip for a cheaper price.

So i say Q9300

1. clockspeed is never irrelevant,

2. higher FSB limits all overclocks,

3. the q9300 barely beats the q6600, at stock speeds the q6700 is faster.

all in all, the q6700 is a far better processor. sure 45nm is great but in the q9300's unique case, it doesnt matter because the performance is still crap.

Hmmm.

Ok if im getting it with this mobo: Asus P5K Intel P35 Socket T (LGA775) ATX Motherboard

http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=MB00028

And this Ram: G.Skill Dual Channel kit 2x 2GB PC6400 DDR2 (800Mhz) Memory (F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ) CL5-5-5-15

http://www.pp.co.nz/products.php?pp_id=MEM00145

Will there be any problem with the OC?

Haha you guys are confusing, you all have valid points lol maybe I should start a poll and put it to the vote. All the CPU performance charts ive looked at the Q9300 seems to be slightly better.

it has lower cache, higher FSB, the two things you want the most are blown away at the starting gates.

in all seriousness, the Q6700 is better and thats that. I like your choice of the P5K, i have one myself and i'll vouch for its overclocking abilities. the ram, however, should be cas latency 4 for overclocking, so the ram can have some breathing room

i will say one thing for it though, the Q9300 is about 7% faster per clock, but when it is that difficult to overclock in the first place, its just not a good idea. using a lower FSB will undoubtedly be better on the motherboard heat-wise, which will probably throw the energy savings that the Q9300 would have out the window.

So the ram good or bad lol? Ok so now im leaning towards q6700 lol.
Would I need the zalman to get 3ghz?

Ive been reading up on Cas Latency. So now Im thinking of requesting ram that is 800mhz cas 4?

Is that good? Whats the cheapest of that type available (in 2gb sticks)

I have the Q9300 and can't get it to overclock well at all. The highest I can get it stable is 2.875 GHz. I have tried to get up around 3.0 GHz and it crashes. I have tried everything for about 2 months with no luck. Even if I have it at stock speed, 2.5 GHz, and even add a the smallest amount increase of power....it crashes. I should have spent the extra $60 and gotten the Q9450...my friend has it and he can do anything he wants to that proc and it begs for more!
