Q9400 vs. 950 vs. 920

Which CPU would be the best? My brother is building a new gaming computer and since he doesn't have an account I posted this for him, and my own interest.

For gaming mainly, what would the best CPU be? They are all Intels.

The i7 920?
The i7 950? or
The Q9400?

Thanks for the help :)

I currently have the V8 heatsink and fan and I'm very happy with it. He'll probably get one too.

Agreed on the i7 being overpriced, but it should come down in time. If he goes with the Q9400 there will only be a slight performance drop from the 920? But nothing major right?

Don't even bother with any LGA 775 processor. Get the 920 or wait for the i5's to come out.

There's nothing wrong with the LGA 775 you will probably spend $300 or more if you get the i7 920 because of the motherboard and RAM you have to have.

because, lga 775 is outdated, there will be no new processors, or motherboards coming out for that socket, ddr3 is also becoming mainstream, so ddr2 will enventually become harder and harder to find at decent prices

True but unless he is going to be updating his CPU and RAM every couple of months for like the next 2 years then get the LGA 775 why it is still available. There is no need for him to get a i7 with the 1366 motherboard and the DDR3 RAM unless he planes to upgrade the CPU and RAM in the future instead of building a new system. I'm sure by the time he decides to upgrade there will be a new socket type out Intel comes out with a new one like every 2 years and the 1366 will be out dated so why bother. If you won't my honest opinion he should go with AMD he will get a better system and save a lot of money plus get a motherboard that will run any processor from like the past 3 years up till now and probably a year or two from now. You can get the Phenom II X4 940 3.0GHz for around $190 compared to the Intel i7 for like $250 and a good motherboard for around $130 compared to the 1366 for $200+ for a good one. Nothing against Intel but they charge to much for there products.

LGA775 sucks, it is end of life, no new processors. Not everyone wants to put out $600 to upgrade mobo+cpu, i personally would rather upgrade cpu first, then once i have some more money grab a better mobo. Go i7 or Phenom II, only realistic options to keep the upgrade options imo.

i like how we both use lga 775 processors :P but this is the truth, lga 1366/1166(or whatever i5 is going to be) and socket am3 are becoming mainstream along with ddr3

my rig is 14 months old, phenom II and 1366 werent out back then. so my options were 775 or phenom I;) i7/i9 will be 1366, i5 1156, and i3 will be 989(mobile) and 775, hte 775 i3's will be the current core 2 quads, but there will be no actual "new" cpu's on 775.

It would be better to go with the i7 if he wants to upgrade and if he does then then i7 is what he needs. If he's just going to build a new system instead of upgrading then he should get the LGA 775 why he can. He should consider using AMD if he wants the best system for the price.
