My dad made a fairly good point yesterday. I'm trying to sell my computer, and if I succeed, I plan on getting a new rig, including the Q9450 right when it comes out. His stand was that it wouldn't be wise to get a CPU right when it came out, but to wait until people tested it and made sure it was good. If I went with this, I'd probably be waiting even longer without a computer to use other than my parent's HP.

My question is: Do you think that the Q9450 will have anything that would stop someone from buying it? Would it be able to hold a good overclock? Or should I wait until they are tester, or just get a Q6600?
 
They most likely will come out with better revisions, such as the Q6600 coming out with the G0, although theres nothing really wrong with buying a processor when it just comes out, except maybe a premium in price. The 45nm processors aren't entirely new either, the QX9650 has been out for some time now, so if there was something wrong with the architecture, it would have been fixed already.
 
According to Tom's Hardware, Intel is delaying the release of that CPU, but not because there is a problem with it. Given the fact that it's already built on a solid platform, and it's getting extra 'tweaking' time when it doesn't really need it, I think it's safe to assume that it's going to be a sweet processor. I plan on getting a Q9550 or a Q9650 within a week or two of release (as soon as prices settle down a little).

So it may not come out until late January or February? Would I be better off (money wise vs. performance) just getting a G0 Q6600? That way I could go 780i, among other things.
 
I thing so far Nvidias chip will only support the dual core 45nm, it probable the battle of letting SLI run on Intels chip. Nvidias got itself in a situation when Intel and AMD since they got ATI make there own Motherboard chipsets and Nvidia it left standing on there own
 
Everything I've read this morning suggests that the 780i natively supports Yorkfield, i.e., 45nm Core 2 Quad. Click here for one article I read, and a related search. I'm gonna call eVGA this morning and see if they can confirm this.

Basically what NVIDIA has done is some tinkering on the motherboard in order to support 45-nm quad-core processors, but that was strictly done on the board level and not in the chipset. The 680i SLI series will support 45nm dual-core processors as is, but they (will not post) with 45nm processors as we found out here. Since the change is on the motherboard there is nothing holding back motherboard makers from coming out with a (newly revised) 680i SLI motherboard to support 45nm quad-core processors. Legit Reviews recently spoke with eVGA about this and they informed us that (eVGA has no plans for a new revision). This makes sense as it would hurt their 780i SLI motherboard sales

I just talked to someone at eVGA. He said that eVGA does not plan on supporting the 45nm Core 2 Quad with the 680i. In fact, he even confirmed what you said: He told me that one of the primary features (marketing strategies) of the 780i is it's native support for the Yorkfields'.

As you said, it would be counter-productive for eVGA to hack the motherboard and offer that type of support with an older product.

So, in short, the 680i will not support 45nm quad core, but the 780i does.
 
I don't really care about the 680i or 780i motherboards. My question was weather I should get the Q9450 when it comes out or not.

Well if you read one of the newer threads then you would know that the new 45nm processors aren't going to come out until February/March of next year.
 
God damnit. I am not going to go 3 months without a computer. I guess my options are:
1) Don't sell my current computer (eBay auction ends tonight)
2) Get the Q6600 now, even though it will go way down in price when the 45nms finally come out
3) Wait 3 months without a computer...

Would I be able to order a Q6600 G0, use it for a while, and return it right before the 45nms come out and get a full refund? I bet this is near impossible, but maybe?
 
A Q6600 would be able to hold it's own over clocked to 3.0GHz against the processor you want. With the delay, that's what I think I'll end up doing.

why dont you get the qx9650 45nm now?
