quad vs dual channal ram

It won't be quad channel, it will be 2 lots of dual channel. 1 set will run together, the other set will run together, they won't all 4 work together to give extra bandwidth

2x2GB will be enough for anything you use your system, for, however you will see extra speed and a more responsive system from 8GB. But then there is the price which comes with that, it may be that the ~$200 spent on memory could be put towards a large upgrade from an AM2+ system to AM3.

For instance, $220 will get you:

or change motherboard to:

to bring it under $200. But, bare in mind that the motherboard I linked just then is open box, meaning everything will work fine, but you may have some accessories missing, like your I/O backplate, SATA cables etc, all stuff which you will either already have, or not need

I think upgrading to the parts I listed would be the better option for the price. 4GB is plenty enough for gaming, even for the very latest and greatest games. The motherboard will also give better future upgrade routes. You will be able to get any AM3 processor in there, up to 16GB memory.

You mentioned getting a cooler and a video card too, what are:

Your current specs for the system you are upgrading?
Your budget for the upgrade?

well this is the base computer i got about 2 years ago

http://www.gateway.com/product_spec.php?product_recid=529668220

i put a nvidia 9400 gt back then and i have to tell you, it was a painful 2 years or gaming.

like i said i just got myself a sweet new PC and just was to pass this one to my bro but dont want him to feal my pain. lol

i also have a 750w psu that i can put in here.

as for a budget there rly isnt one... this is just an idea that poped into my head a few hours ago. i just want him to be able to play sc2 WoW and any other game he will pick up with no problems. and i was thinking a 6870 in there b/c i have two in my computer and i love them so much.

EDIT : hmm that link says this computer has 800mhz ram but speccy is showing 400...idk if speccy isnt working right but then i only have to buy 4 more gb so thats like $80 less if i dont get a new MOBO

I can understand your pain lol

What manufacturer/model power supply is it?

You can get a GTX460 for less than a 6870, and performance not all that far off when overclocked, and at stock, it will be easily handling WoW, SC2 and any other game.

As for speccy showing 400MHz, that is correct. DDR = Double Data Rate, so double whatever it says on there. 400 x 2 = 800MHz. It is because it does work on both the rising and falling of each clock cycle

If you added the memory it would handle games, however, a couple years down the line, your brother or you will have to buy a new motherboard, CPU and memory, because you will have nowhere to upgrade to.

I would personally recommend selling your memory, motherboard and CPU, and putting it towards the upgrades.
