Quad vs dual

Ok, need some info on what to get. Wanting to know which is better for gaming, the dual core or quad core? From what im told dual is better as of now for gaming but later on quad would be better. When will these games start working better with quad cores, anytime soon or would it be safe to get a dual core and it last me at least a year(about dec 2008) before more games that come out work better with quad cores.

I would agree with what you are saying. I know I have been using my AMD Dual Core processor for well over 1 year now and most the games I play still don't even utilze the 2nd core, I find it hard to believe the games will be utilizing a 3rd and 4th core when they cant even use the 2nd. I play titan quest and when I play my 1st processor is at like 98% usage and the 2nd one is at like 20%. Obviously this varies but one would think more of a 50/50 split. Same with Half life 2 and CSS, they are just now coming out with a fix to utilize the dual cores. I think quad cores are sweet, but I think they won't be pracitcal for many years to come.

i run a q6600 and its brill easily ocs and i got over a dual core so it would be future proof. i have had no problems playing old games like cod uo or playing new games like the crysis demo.

If they are running at the same speed, then quad-core would be better for everything. However you are right in saying that as of now dual-cores at a higher clock speed will outperform a quad-core at a lower speed in most games.
